Where in my computer can I go to find out the maximum amount of RAM memory that the computer or operating system will support.

I recently tried to put in some additional memory and the task manager and the 'my computer' hardware window did not reflect the increase.

Thanks in advance

32 bit operating systems like Windows XP can't address more than 4 gigs of RAM.

In linux there are some ways around it.

eta:
max supported by your motherboard can be found on http://crucial.com

+1. Go to crucial, either enter your system info or run the tool on their website and it will tell you

Keep in mind that of that 4GB total in a 32-bit system, not all of it will be system RAM like you put in. Some is video ram from your graphics card, for instance.

Unless you have a dedicated graphics card.

32 bit Windows won't even use the full 4 gigs, which is why you see many new computers still being sold with 32 bit Vista coming with 3 gb of RAM.

I found that out the hardway, although ram is so cheap these days lossing 1GB is nothing.
