The (latest) gay marriage thread got me wondering:

Why should two citizens who are married pay less taxes then an equivalent single person?

same goes for kids, why do they owe less into the pot then someone without kids?

The people who came up with these laws want you to procreate apparently.

They don't

The standard deduction for a married couple is less than double the standard deduction for a single person.
Therefore married couples deduct less and pay more taxes - hence the "marriage penalty".

This is not correct.

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf

Go look at page 2, where the Standard Deduction amounts are.

The "marriage penalty" has to do with the marginal rates, and only affects certain couples depending on changes in those rates.

The tax code of the United States of America is used to promote SOCIAL POLICY, with funding the goverment as a secondary concern.

That is not some tinfoil-hatted conspiracy claim.  I am an IRS employee.  We all know it.  We talk about it.  It's an open non-secret.

There are far better ways to fund government than an income tax.  There are few better ways, however, to create incentives for people to behave in the manner you want them too, however, than to BRIBE THEM WITH THEIR OWN MONEY.

Main reason I and the SO are not married or have not for 14 years.  Like I am going to GIVE the govt anymore money than I do.  What really irks me is property tax for schools.  Why should I pay, I am not using the schools.  If you use, you pay, if not, you don't.
