I don't know when, but the local cop shop has the door locked after hours.
I remember going in to the station after hours 20 or so years ago and the door was unlocked.
Is this to keep lunatics out and protect the dispatchers? Or is it a 911,terrorism deal?

Hmmm, could it be so that people aren't sneaking around the police station at night?

State Police barracks/troops around here are always locked IIRC.

Everytime I visited the troop my dad worked at it was locked as far back as I can remember visiting it (about 12 years ago).

In my PD, door to the lobby is open 24/7.  All other doors are locked 24/7.

It's so that we can eat donuts and post on arfcom without being disturbed.

Ours has been locked since the 50's in 2 separate buildings.  Ring the bell, get buzzed in to the lobby.

Some PDs maintain a municipal jail in their buildings.  Some have no jailer and use a dispatcher or the officer assigned to the beat in which the PD is located to check on the prisoners.  Decent enough reason to lock the doors after hours I'd guess.
