OK, looking to try Irish Whiskey, which to buy?
Anyone know anything about the Cooley Distillery products?

I drink both bourbon(Knob Creek, Evan Williams Single Barrell) and Single Malt Scoth(Highland Park,Abalour).

What Irish Whiskey might be worth a try?

Jamesons.  A good double shot to sip and chase with a Guiness Stout.  Or other beer of your choice.

Thumbs down:

Jameson's
Bushmills
Tullamore Dew (aka Tully)
John Powers

Meh:

Knappogue Castle

Thumbs up:

Jameson 12yr ($37 –– IMO best "bang for the buck")
Redbreast ($40)
Black Bush
Bushmills 10yr

Thumbs up x2, but very expensive:

Jameson Gold Reserve ($70)
Middleton ($125)
Jameson 16yr (?)
Bushmills 20yr

Can you give me any input on the Knappogue?

Sure.  I've had about two 750ml bottles, of the 15yr vintage (not to be confused with their original 1951 issuing), which should run you around $38-40/bottle.

I found the taste of Knappogue Castle to be far too woody (almost peaty, but no peat is used in Irish whiskeys) for my tastes.   It's also not very common in liquor stores.

For the same amount of money you can have a much better experience with Jameson 12yr, which is much smoother and is commonly available at most liquor stores.  Redbreast (another single malt Irish, like Knappogue Castle) while not as available and a tick more expensive, is a close second.

I remember coming across a Irish Whiskey that peat had been used, I think I read about in Micheal Jackson's guide to Whiskeys, Bourbons, and Scotches.  (Not to be confused with the gloved pedophile).

For normal drinking, Bushmill's 10-year single malt.

For celebratory occasions, I've a bottle of Middleton's.

Irish Whiskey has been my go too drink most of my life. Normally drank neat, or with just a couple ice cubes. I always figured my grandfather and Jack Higgins had the right idea. Black Bush is my all time favorite, followed by regular Bushmills, and Tullamore Dew. I have to admit that Red Breast looks very interesting.

I don't know anything about Irish Whiskey but, my Grandfather had a shot of Irish Whiskey every morning.  He didn't drink anymore all day.

He wasn't sick a day in his life until his stroke at 75 years old.

When I was sick he gave me a shot of Irish Whiskey.  It burned for an hour.

That is all.

If you're looking to compare Jameson to Black Bush get the 12 yr old J. Comparing BB to regular Jameson is  basically comparing top shelf to call at your average bar.

Red Breast is the best whiskey I have every had, bar none.

I have been drinking it now for a couple years after an Irishman just off the boat told me about it.

I bought two extra bottles and gave them to two guys at work who I know would appreciate it, they now are Red Breast drinkers.

Ignore me at your own detriment.
