Anyone see the film or read the book?

I didn't even know it existed until someone told me the story the other day behind the guy and how they made a movie.

I just got done watching the movie and I now see it was a book first.

I'm not a film junkie nor do I feel my taste in movies is better then others but for some reason this film did something to me, I would say it's one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

Hey guys I just watched Star Wars for the first time and thought it was really great. Anyone else seen Star Wars?

You should really read the book. Krakauer did a hell of a lot of work digging into Chris' life and tracing his steps into the wilderness of Alaska. I read the book when it came out, as I recalled the story in the news when Chris' body was found. It's a truly compelling story. Many of the characters you saw in the movie were sort of composites of several characters in the book.

I took my copies of "Into the Wild" and "Into Thin Air" to a lecture by Jon Krakauer in KC about 15 years ago and got them autographed.

I saw the movie. My understanding on the book & it is that they were heavily romanticized. A leading theory is that he simply starved to death rather than poison as the film shows. Adventurous kid but he forgot the 7 P's.

I'm smart enough a person to know that the movie overdid things to try to lure you into the character and the plot.

It's a weird thing for me though, not really knowing the history behind the guy and just watching the movie as a movie (kinda like big fish) it pulls it off well.

I'm sure the book will ruin the movie for me and I'm sure the TRUE day in and day out story of the Chris would even ruin the book.

"forgot"? I'd contend that he never really knew them in the first place. Kind of a classic case of a guy who was so smart taht he was an idiot. He didn't know how much he really didn't know.

The book really doesn't romanticize Chris' death, I think. It's pretty matter-of-fact that the kid had numerous opportunities to save himself but his ignorance, arrogance, hubris or all three prevented him from doing what he should have done.

I like the pointy-ear guy, but the Cylons were dumb.

I really liked the movie. I never read the book, but I did read the article that Backpacker (IIRC) did on him.

In the book they explain that he did in fact starve to death but because he ate some potato(I think) or root
type thing. It prevented his body from  absorbing the nutrients and thus he died of starvation while still eating.
I read the book a while ago and just recently bought the book-on ipod.
Its a great story.

I think it was Outside

I read Into Thin Air after reading their intro version.  That book left such an impession on me (I never really considered what it took physiologically to hit the high peaks). I read Into The Wild afterwards. As is typical, book is much better than the movie.

If you want a look at religious extemism, read Krakaeur's  Under The Banner Of Heaven, it's a real eyeopener.

My wife and I refer to it as "into the stupid".    The guy was no hero.   He was out of his element and only realized it after he was starving and could no longer get out.

Don't know if the movie is accurate but it explains that the plant he ate shuts down your digestive system meaning you better  get your ass somewhere that has an IV.

I don't think anyone here is calling him a hero.
