Was at this bar once.  And some guy next to me shook some salt into his hefeweizen.  Ummm, I need some answers here.

Why?  It looked interesting, but ummm, why?  I might even try it out if it improves the taste (?)

Working in a bar I see this every night. Adding salt to a light beer is supposed to bring out the taste. Sorta like strawberries and champagne.

Supposedly, the salt will bring a "head" back onto the top of the glass.

No self-respecting beer lover would ever put salt in their beer. [:D] Weissebier? I've seen 'em (altho rarely) put in a lemon wedge in Munich. My mom (German heritage) used to put a shot of tomato juice in.

It is usually done to try and improve the flavor of cheap swill.Good luck there.Don't need this with a quality beer.

I can't believe this guy tainted his beer like that.....I drink Hefeweissen consistently like water in Germany - Hefeweissen is already a dark beer - why contaminate it? Now if it was Licher..........I could understand.....I think Licher tastes like p#ss......but Hefeweissen?........That guy at the bar needs to be slapped............ [beer]

Down here in Texas we call that "Red Draws"

Here that would be a bloody beer.

Adding salt to beer generally dulls the carbonation giving it a little flatter feel; hence allowing the flavor to be more apparent.

but what do I know, I am not much of a beer drinker.

Welp, around here some people put salt in Mexican piss beer like Corona, but NEVER in a good German beer! That's sacrilidge! (however you spell it) [shock]

If you don't like the taste of the beer you're drinking, you should switch brands, or order a Shirley Temple [BD]

I've only heard of one person who has done that.  He added a pinch of salt to Budweiser from a can, said it killed the aluminum taste. [>:/] I had no idea what he was talking about.

... bletch, yuck, Hefeweizen sux, maybe it was done to hide the taste.

I too prefer hefeweissen, hands down, and ditto what you said about the salt!
You ever seen the rice kernal in the glass?  It really does appear to work.  NEVER had a bad hefeweissen in Germany!  I try the hefe in the microbreweries in the USA, but they seldom get it right. Used to bring those half liter's back from Germany by the case.  Sure made for some heavy luggage!

When I was a kid I remember people saying
"What do you want? Egg in your beer?"
What the hell does that mean?
Talk about DISGUSTING!

Because it's refreshing. I don't always drink beer just to get drunk.

bjklinton,

Nope never noticed a rice kernal in any glass of Hefeweissen.....been a while since I've been to a bar though too. I find its much more resourceful ( though less fun ) to bring a rack of Hefeweissen to ones barracks room, put as much as humanely possible in the freezer tray, and rent a couple DVD's........Video, tuneage, and ice cold beer.......now, if I could get more women.........................

Aren't wheat beers (hefenweissen) illegal in Germany?

I hate wheat beers and would eat the salt and throw the beer out

Give me a porter over a dopplebock over that crap.

SS109,

Ummmmm......no. Wheat beer is more common then water in Germany.....if they ban it - everyone in Germany will either a) die or b) start a civil insurrection........They LIVE off of Wheat beer...Its an acquired taste, doesn't taste like Licher Pilsner P#SS, and for some reason....no one steals my beer!!! More for me!! Ha Ha ....... [beer] [beer] [beer] [smoke]
