I mounted a red dot scope on top of the carrying handle of my M4 A3 carbine (to allow use of the ironsights as a backup).  Due to the height of the scope above the barrell, if I sight the scope in at long range, it will be way off for close range.  What distance do you all recommend I use as a compromise?

read up about offset, most like a 50 yard zero, but since you mounted on top of the carry handle your offset will be more that 2.6 inches Pat Rodgers did a great write up on the very issue in SWAT magazine

I think you'll find that mounting the reddot on top of the upper (and not the carry handle), combined with a folding BUIS, will be much more effective.

I understand the desire to economize with using the carryhandle, but man that's going to be some awful cheek weld.

The onoly time I'd recommend mounting an optic to the carry handle is when the carryhandle isn't removeable.

Mount it on the hand guards instead.

Failed to see that it was mounted on a detachable carry handle.

First off, you mounted an Aimpoint on top of a removable carry handle?

Not good.  The carry handle needs to go.  There are better ways of keeping irons.

Second, offset is offset.  It makes no difference at what range you zero in.  At CQB ranges you will still hit way low, especially because of the way you mounted the Aimpoint.

And forget about a cheek weld.

Now about ditching the carry handle and mounting the scope on the flat top with back up iron sights?
