Sometimes I hate being the dependable one. The one who shows up for work on time everyday. While others cruise in late. The one who has to fly halfway across the country to babysit the boss's brother at a convention because he can't be trusted to show up and work (which he didn't). The one who has his shift changed so just in case the one who is constantly late doesn't show up to work is covered.
Some days I really hate being the dependable one. |
| Same here. In five years of work at my last job I only missed 3 days and was late ONCE!!!! If they asked me to stay late after my shift I would, OT baby!!! One time I worked from 0700 to 1500 then came back IN at 2300 to 0700!!!! Then had to work from 1900 to 0700!!! |

Quoted: There is a lot of truth in this statement, but luckily where I work the upper management has been pretty fair about getting rid of the slackers first. The dependable ones aren't the ones who will necessarily keep their jobs. The ones who suck up to the boss and play the political games properly are the ones most likely to stay. |

Yes, to a degree. I get sent to the projects that are teetering on the brink of disaster, where the customer is pissed beyond belief at some demonstration of superhuman idiocy, and I get to try and recover the disaster, chill the customer out and win them over again. I'm also the one who gets the call when one of my wife's train wreck friends goes off the rails and needs a tire changed at 0300 or has some self-induced crashing FAIL episode.

Its all about saving the asshats who talk a big game but when it comes down to the nut cuttin', fold. i usually end up with the leftovers of thier crap while they skim off the easy gravy work. Ive quit jobs when the lazy people foist too much crap on me. Ive told managament upon leaving "if you want a slave to clean up your messes go hire someone else. im tiredof it."

Im always the one my coworkers fall back on to make sure a project is finished, airline tickets are booked, flights are on time, everyone is up and moving in the morning when we are on the road etc.
And my boss give me a "OK". Review. I almost punched him out. He's one of the clowns that cant make it to work on time |

The same applies with family and friends. Truthfully, it's getting old. |

Compulsively so. This.. Early to work. Family caregiver. Friends know they can count on me to do what I say. On time for everything. I'll work backwards in my head the time it will take to do whatever I have to accomplish to be on time. But I never let myself be so dependable as to be taken advantage of emotionally/economically......I'm smart enough to know the difference |

I'm uberdependable.. even the VP noticed and mentioned to my project manager.
I'm pretty much the first one in the office regardless and often early (like 1-2 hours before anyone else) my billing hours are high so that makes her happy. (for every hour I bill a customer, they get about 2:1 dollars) |

i work for the state. wish i had a fireplace to burn all the dead wood there is. This sounds familiar. I work with a guy that makes over twice what I do, who sleeps all night in the most visible post there is. I do 100x the work he does. He doesn't even answer his own fucking phone when someone calls. The yard officer usually does it. To make it worse, the Capt. & Lt.'s will sit and shoot the shit for hours, right in front of him, and never say a word. Then that same Capt writes a guy up for HAVING a sudoku puzzle in his pocket on a post that he was going to work over lunch. Fucking incredible. I'm GTFO as soon as I can. I can't work for/with lazy POS motherfuckers anymore. I'll work for myself for the rest of my life if I can manage. |

I showed up during the big blackout of 03 when nobody else showed up. I show up during big time snowfalls (I'm going in late today though)... I've been there late and on the weekends too. I'm also the dependable one for family too. Sometimes it sucks. |

And another thing. I don't drink coffee so just because I'm the first one to get here does not mean I'm going to have a fresh pot ready for the slackers. Yes I've already told someone to fuck off this morning. I make the first pot in the morning. And then typically after lunch, when I find the empty craft. Some here are VIPs and are above making coffee. |

I have been making a conscious effort to learn how to say "NO".
I'm self employed (usually an army of one, with the occasional part time help). I constantly save people's asses that can't be bothered to plan ahead of time. I also work very hard to make sure I don't blow deadlines. I was at work until 4am on Monday (well at 4am it was Tuesday) when I realized the 16th wasn't Wednesday *DOH!* I have kicked myself for being too nice on many occasions. From a recreational standpoint, I was the singer in a band for about 8 years. I did everything except pick up the instrument and put them in the other guys hands. It was playing music for the sake of playing music and not my job so there wasn't any financial rewards, so after many years of being the eternal babysitter/den-mother I pulled the plug. I also have come to the rescue for loads of people, fixing their cars, helping them move, etc. etc. It sucks sometimes, but the other option of being a sack-o-shit is not viable. |

I'm very dependable. Always on time, always show up. I don't let the slackers bother me. It's about what type of person I want to be, to me personally. I don't care what other people do. I don't own my own business anymore, so I figure since times are hard, if it gets tough, I will keep my job by being dependable, working hard and doing whatever I am asked. Fortunately, I have enough skill in multiple areas to even be employed.
In this economic/employment environment, I am kind of bewildered however how people are comfortable with slacking. |
