Your TV should detect the input resolution on its own. On most inputs you aren't going to be able to change it on the fly, as it is being sent in one format or the other, not both.

If you have a fixed pixel TV (ie. a DLP or LCP type tv) then that display will have a "native resolution" and also a refresh rate.

1080 vs 720 vs 480 would be the resolution.
1080i is an interlaced vertical scan and 1080p is a progressive vertical scan.

Your owners manual will tell you your resolution and capable scan options.
All flat panel tv's will convert the video inputs to its own native resolution as that is the only way it can be displayed.

In short, as long as your tv will accept the video signal you are supplying, it will convert it to its native resolution and you don't have to do a thing.  You cannot change the native resolution display of a fixed pixel display.
