Tesla Motors hired a former Harley Davidson Executive...they are adding a Electric Sedan to their lineup with a release in 2010. Still expensive at $60,000 each...but America does have a booming auto maker with the Tesla Roadster. General production began in 2008 and they are having no problem selling their vehicles around the world: www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080502/FREE/422389269/1023/rss01&rssfeed=rss01 Can't make them fast enough and have a waiting list. |

They can't make them fast because the car is riddled with production problems and cost overruns. I would not hold Tesla up as a model of American automotive success. considering harley isn't doing too well right now either i wouldn't consider one of their old execs "useful" right now as well. |

Whoohoo! |

They're looking for a bail out and they've produced a total of 4 cars. Have they even actually produced a car and sold it yet? Yep, there's a real success story for you. I wonder if I can form a car company, produce four prototypes, and then request millions in government money to bail me out. |

Tesla's transmission maker screwed up their tranny's and they swapped to a different version. 2 hr job refitting the tranny.
The 2 lawsuits they are in, they are going after people that left them and stole their technology which they own. Harley doing badly....The US dollar has gained value against foreign currencies hurting foreign sales.....but Europe and Australia have been buying the XR1200's....long before they ever have been released on the US market....but Harley is in a pickle this month as it needs hundreds of millions in credit to keep going....that banks are hoarding. Wouldn't it suck it we lost Harley Davidson and Detroit? Buy a Harley. |

Doing good? Aren't they in the middle of 2 lawsuits? and way behind in production not because of demand, but because they are having alot of problems in production? this, besides tesla is a SMALL SMALL company compared to the "Big 3" +1 It's like comparing Scaled Composites to Lockeed-Martin, Boeing and Northrop. |

Not saying they make junk, but for the price they aren't the best around anymore. the same thing that made harley big the last 10 years is killing them now. people bought them becuase of the image and the fact people has disposable income for toys. now those that want a bike can't afford it. those that NEED a bike for basic transport buy a rice burner. |

Harleys used to be a lot more affordable. Then they started marketing primarily to yuppies with loads of cash to burn. Well... now that people don't have the cash to spend on a very expensive motorcycle, HD is suffering. Go figure. This is not surprising. |

+1 It's like comparing Scaled Composites to Lockeed-Martin, Boeing and Northrop. And comparing Scaled Composites to Tesla is like comparing BMW to Fiat Scaled Composites does stuff that works !!! Their track record is incredible - as Burt Rutan said, 'The OTHER space shuttle company' IIRC |
| I actually wouldnt mind a Tesla rig of some sort but they are expensive and in spite of it being very cheap to operate they only have a max range of like 230 miles and then it takes 3 HOURS to recharge them. If they had some sort of deal where battery stations were located across the country and you could just swap your battery pack for one with full juice i think they'd have a winner. Until then, they will be very niche for business commuters only who can leave them to charge overnight. |

Hey, that's a pretty good idea! ![]() I found a hilarious comment on an Auto Blog. It seems like we as Americans should have been buying GM cars all along. In the end, we bought them anyway, but we donโt have the metal in our driveways to show for it.
Iโve come up with a great business model, though. Iโm going to put a building on a farm and call it a factory. I should be able to get a subsidy to not grow corn and a handout for not selling any cars.

This is the first time that I've heard of the company Tesla, but gasoline prices have been declining at very precipitous rate, and I think their main selling point is that they don't use gasoline.....
Once their backlog get filled, if there is really a backlog "with cash on the barrel head," I wouldn't put too much money on the fact that they will be around in 5 years, even with Uncle Sam's bail out money. |

Gas prices may have fell back down in the US but in the rest of the world fuel prices are still high.
Gas is still plus $3 here. I'm seriously thinking of either an electric bike from: Zeromotorcycles.com or enertiabike.com Gotta wait and see how the back recovers from surgery I just got tho. |

Thats just because your govt is raping you on fuel taxes. The product itself costs no more there then here to refine. |

The Tesla sports cars are made by Lotus in England. Lotus is owned by an Indonesian company I believe. Don't know about the sedans. |

The OP crashes and burns... Tesla Motors has already asked to be part of the bailout.
Tesla is having all sorts of problems Tesla Wants $400 Million Bailout Loan - Anyone Else?
Friday, November 21, 2008 | 5 comments ยป Categories | Reports, Tesla Everyone wants a piece of the (bailout) pie; even tiny Tesla Motors. The Associate Press reported that the Silicon Valley-based electric car joined Detroit's Big Three automakers in their bid to get a $25 billion government aid. Tesla was said to have applied for about $400 million in no to low-interest loans to fund two projects, details of which weren't revealed. But unfortunately for Tesla, GM, Ford and Chrysler LLC failed spectacularly to make a convincing case for the $25 billion bailout with the Congress telling them to return in December with a viable turnaround plan - click here for more details. And while one could somewhat justify bailing out the Big Three to preserve jobs and help the U.S. economy from falling into a deeper recession, what's the big deal if Tesla goes bankrupt? We're talking about a small company that builds one limited production sportscar -the Roadster- and which might make another one in a few years time - the 4-door sedan Model-S. So what? http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2008/11/tesla-wants-400-million-bailout-loan.html |
