You see these guys in "unplugged" concerts and specials on HBO. They're considered Rock Legends. My question is, do they deserve this status or are they overrated? I plan to do this for other musicians and groups as well. |

I don't care for Springsteen except he has written some good songs. I think Clapton is past his prime but at one time was a monster on the guitar.

Both are overrated.
Clapton is pretty good. I saw Clapton and Santana in concert together several years ago. Carlos smoked his ass when they played together. Clapton just finally stopped playing and started watching Carlos make the strings smoke. Springsteen pretty much has written the same song about a bazillon times. I don't even listen to him anymore. |

Springsteen is a boring guitar player, and overrated. Clapton is God, but as far as I'm concerned, he fell of the face of the earth when Cream disbanded. I refuse to acknowledge anything he did later. He died when Cream died. When they reunited in 2005 for a concert, he was raised from the dead and it was glorious. He then promptly died again. |

Clapton's overrated. Hit his peak in the mid to late sixties with Bluesbreakers and then the Cream. He's been coasting ever since.
By contrast, nearly 40 years after his death, Jimi Hendrix is still almost universally regarded as the greatest electric guitarist that ever lived. The chances of another in our lifetime don't seem too likely. It is almost impossible to over-rate Hendrix. |

I'll go out on a limb and say that EVH was a cliched joke by 1990. Tap... ugh. ETA... Oh, and as I recall Eddie is a huge Clapton fan. P.S. And when I saw Clapton in 2006, he pretty much sucked. Though he still was demi-god when I saw in 1990. Where is the 'Ignore Member' button?

EVH is the most influential guitarist since Jimi, but what's he done to compare to Electric Ladyland? Woodstock? Band of Gypsys at the Fillmore? No, Jimi defined electric guitar for all time. |

Both have influenced countless guitarists since their 'heyday' Jimi is awesome, but I think EVH shocked the guitar world out of the Styx, REO Speedwagon, etc mindset too (thank god) |

A lot of you guys probably never heard this, but EVHs porno movie music when he hit rock bottom a few years ago.
I think he was a meth head when this vid was made. He does play drums, guitar and keyboards though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpACZS0vSO4 |

I liked Springsteen's early music and think he was an authentic voice of a working-man experience and growing up in a certain culture. I knew that culture –– Route 9, Raceway Park, Stone Pony, all that –– and his lyrics meant something to me. And the E Street Band kicked it. Back in '76 I saw them play for 2 hours, take a break, then come out for another 2 to the point where the house lights got turned up on them. At the end they were playing 1950s rock and roll and just having fun. The guy was just IMMENSE on stage.
But he pissed me off when he screwed around on his wife, and I can't stand to watch Scialfa on stage with him. I didn't feel a common bond anymore. I think they're both legit rock legends, yes, if there's such a thing. |

Clapton is very talented, but a bit overrated through his career––-that is, he did some great stuff early, but the later stuff is not so good.
Springsteen has always been a no-talent hack and I don't understand what anyone sees in his music. He had one good album his whole career. |

I've seen Clapton in concert several times and Springsteen in concert something like 9 times.
In the early 70's, Springsteen was raw and emotional. Put on a fantastic show (sometimes as much as 4 hours). Then he got famous and what happened to him happens to most Rock Stars....they start singing their social outlook and politics. Then the music starts to suffer. He still puts on a decent show (saw him 2 years ago) and has some good songs, But nothing like when he started. Clapton was the same. Awesome guitar and decent song writer. He still puts on a good show, but he's older & more mellow. ( saw him several years ago in a small venue in Houston) Overrated.......maybe! Talented......definitely. Do I like their music,,,,,Yes. But that's my opinion and my taste...and that's what music is all about. |
