So what do you guys think of Howa rifles, are they worth looking at? I'm thinking of getting one in 223 or 308 with a heavy barrel. Should I stay away? Due to the price
of ammo, I am shifting towards more precision shooting, and saving the AR's healthy
diet for a rainy day.

Excellent quality from what Ive heard.....can't say first hand though. I think Howa has made a bunch of stuff for Browning IIRC.

ETA...there was a guy at my old club that used to shoot some nice groups at 200 with his 308 Varmint.

Howas are excellent rifles.  In the past, I believe they made rifles for Weatherby (possibly Vanguards ?).

Legacy Sports has a nice 'Ranchland Security' model, a 20" barrel in a Hogue overmold stock for a very reasonable price.  Don't know about .223, but it definately comes in .308 and 7mm-08.

Yeah the make some stuff for weatherby. They are supposed to be pretty good quality and reasonably priced. I have no personal experience with them

Howa makes the Weatherby Vanguard.  I have one in .257Wby that is a tack driver.  A couple of years ago they were named rifle of the year.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

They are made in Japan

Japan banned rifle ownership in 1971

I've got a .22-250 heavy barreled varmiter that I won in a gun raffle that is an absolute tack driver...

Been looking at bolt guns in .223 lately and I have to admit I would rather buy a new Howa/Vanguard than a new Remington 700. They just look like a better made rifle to me. Admitedly I must admit I shoot a pair of SKB shotguns so am not entirely impartial when it comes to Japanese gun makers.

Friend of mine has had several heavy barrel howas that were really good shooters.

They are very good rifles, they made the 1500 for S&W and they make the Vanguards for Weatherby. The triggers had some issues in the past this has been corrected and they are great. Mirokou made the Japanese Weatherby Weatherbies.

I have a Weatherby Vanguard in 300 Weatherby. Excellent gun. Much better than a comparably priced RemChester

I've got a Smith and Wesson Model 1500 Deluxe .30-06 from the 1980's that was made by Howa, they also made the Weatherby Vanguards as stated.  When Smith and Wesson stopped selling rifles (though they now have S&W labeled rifles again), Mossberg took up the line for awhile.

Does Howa still make the Weatherby rifles?

I've got a Howa 1500 stainless 30-06 that I love.  I got a steal of a deal on it, but wasn't initially happy with it.  The trigger was painful and I'd been spoiled on the last couple rifles i purchased as they had hand-lapped barrels.  After 200 shots of break-in, the rifle tightened up VERY nicely with good handloads.  Definitely my go-to gun when I'm not using my 6.8 for deer.
