If you asked someone for their chili recipe and were told that they didn't give it out, would you be offended?

Now with extra poll.

No.  My MIL & wife won't give out their pie crust recipe.  Some recipes are "family secrets" and I can respect that.

ETA - they won't even give this recipe to first cousins.

Nope. I don't give out recipes at work either when people ask for them. Thats how I make my living!!

I would probably laugh at them.

That only happens down south where the people are so full of themselves they even admit they're (insert state here)ians before they're Americans.

My chili has beans and noodles, so how much better could it get ?

"Family secret" recipes are bull shit. Why can't we help each other? Granny got the recipe from someone, why not share it?

......................bitter because my older brother got the secret family recipe for fruit cake and now he won't make any more of it...................................

Prolly not. But that is kind of a crappy thing to do.

I even give people recipes for things we cook at my Pub.

Offended? Hell, no.

If they have a secret ingredient that made outstanding chili they would be rich already.
Why not give a friend the recipe? It's not like the family wealth would be redistributed because the secret's out.

REAL chili does NOT have beans, or noodles!!!!!
It's chili!

Keeping recipes secret is stupid, unless it is somehow tied to your livelihood.

Hell no but then again I've been on cook-off teams where the head guy makes the rubs and sauces the night before so other can't figure out whats in it.

Me too.  If you want it again, come back and pay for it.

We had a chili cookoff at work yesterday. I didn't win but I did well, and one of my coworkers asked for the recipe today.

She was not pleased when I didn't express eagerness to share. I'm trying to decide whether or not I should re-think.

The internet has destroyed "family recipes".

Google "chili recipe" and start reading, comparing, then experimenting.

Back in the day secret recipes were held close, but now you've not only had decades of cook books, now you have online contests and whole communities of people, who will never meet to TASTE this amazing recipe, so the only way to get that recognition... is by posting it. It's kinda like a guy throwing his rifle down the driveway.

Will it change your life if she makes the chili, and tells people o so and so get me that recipe ?

What is she offering you?

My Grandmother will trade the really good recipes FOR really good recipes.

Otherwise, to hell with co-workers, they ain't family, they can do their own research.

Unless you rely on recipe's to make a living, I don't see what the big deal is..

+1.  That remark, aside from the fact that it was stupid, pissed me off a little too.

It makes sense to keep it secret if you are entering it in competition. For just your own, no. It would be better if they traded a recipe of their own though. That is just fair.

Wouldn't do you any good to ask me for a chili recipe. Sure I can tell you what I put in it, but I do chili by taste, so it never turns out quite the same twice.

No beans and absolutely no noodles in my chili.
