I was wondering what some other opinions are for the minimum number of magazines you should have for each pistol?

Does that number vary depending on the round count of the mags?
11/17/2008 10:09:18 AM EDT
[#1]
TEN
11/17/2008 10:09:48 AM EDT
[#2]
Miniumum 12 for rifles.

8 for handguns.

But that's just me.

[#3]
I keep 7 per rifle.  5 per pistol.

You can never have too many mags.  I need more mags.
11/17/2008 10:10:30 AM EDT
[#4]
Whatever you're comfortable with. Some here think they need 100 mags per firearm. I've got 2-3 per most pistols (with about 8 or so for my 1911's), six mags for my M1A, and about a dozen mags per AR. That's comfortable for me. But I may add a few here and there over time.

10 or so.

10 per pistol

for the reasons already mentioned plus when I am at the range I want to shoot, not load mags
11/17/2008 10:17:58 AM EDT
[#7]
If you're a really good shot you'd only need one.
11/17/2008 10:22:32 AM EDT
[#8]
Besides whatever mags the pistol comes with when I buy it, I almost always immediately buy another 10 factory mags as a minimum. Just my own rule of thumb.

Buying those P14.45 and P99 mags put a hurtin on the wallet.

I lived through the $75 G17 mags and don't ever want to be caught short again.
11/17/2008 11:53:10 AM EDT
[#9]
at least 10 per pistol is ideal
11/17/2008 11:54:12 AM EDT
[#10]
I try for 5 minimum per pistol. More than that if possible but 5 is my minimum.
11/17/2008 11:55:13 AM EDT
[#11]
5 per pistol, and I like 8 per rifle.
11/17/2008 11:57:27 AM EDT
[#12]
Minimum, which is what you asked for, is two.  Remember, two = one and one = none.  So in order to attain the minimum of two you really need four.  Of course, living life as a minimalist never really appealed to me all that much, so I'd say you should go for at least double the minimum.  So, um, is eight enough?
11/17/2008 11:57:57 AM EDT
[#13]
10 per gun.

11/17/2008 11:58:20 AM EDT
[#14]
10 per pistol, but not that you will ever use that many. Just for back ups in case others break. Unless you have an H&K then if you have more than three mags you must be a wealthy SOB
11/17/2008 12:00:37 PM EDT
[#15]
A dozen on all hi caps. I have 4 each for a Model 41 and Sig220. I'll probably pick up another couple for the Sig.

Somebody has to say it...

87 per gun, the answer is always 87.

Any # <87 is automatic FAIL.

11/17/2008 12:07:09 PM EDT
[#18]
I do six per pistol, ten per rifle.
11/17/2008 12:08:57 PM EDT
[#19]
Only really need three.  The rest I'll pick up off dead cops.
11/17/2008 12:11:49 PM EDT
[#20]
I am for ten each on the guns I use often.  I also say ten per rifle even if they use the same mags.
11/17/2008 12:15:22 PM EDT
[#21]
10 rifle, 5 pistol
11/17/2008 12:15:24 PM EDT
[#22]
As many as you can afford.

This

For my 1911 I have (6) 7 round mags, (2) 8 round mags, and (2) Chip McCormick 10 rounders
I only have 2 mags for my Taurus 24/7

15 AR mags

I always thought 5 was a start.

I add from there when I could find them on sale.

Yea it's kind of an OCD thing for a lot of us.
I don't really think I've got to have as many as I do.
But I can't seem to stop some times

30/rd P Mags=50
30/rd USGI=30
20/rd USGI=30
45 caliber Sig 8@8rd each
40 caliber Glock=15@15rd /babyglock 3@8rd
9mm S&W= 3@15rd
9mm Sig=6@15rd

No I really don't have to have that many
well I haven't needed them yet!
But if I do:)
Now I have several revolvers/no speed loaders? Guess I better fix that

You know thats funny, I have never thought of getting speed loaders?
I don't know why I have not

I think a realstic # would be as many as you could carry
in a vest or pouch. My vest holds 6
And one pouch/shoulder strap holds 6
11/17/2008 12:50:11 PM EDT
[#28]
20 per rifle
10 per Pistol

anything after that is a bonus

See if anyone gets THAT obscure reference.
11/17/2008 1:04:11 PM EDT

3 for the pistols I do not use much, 6+ for got-to pistols.

As for rifles a full loadout with a few to spare.  A lot to spare is better.

I mean, isn't THIS VERY QUESTION the reason 87 was invented?????????????????

Magazines are ultimately disposable, and without one your semi-auto is a single shot.

Magazines get:
- Lost
- Damaged, especially if you do any competitive shooting or "action" training
- a lemon once in a while
- lent to a friend
- rotated

Therefore, I like to have:
- 4 as absolute minimum for the least used firearms I own
- 8 as absolute minimum for frequently used firearms
- 10-20 for each primary defensive pistol
- 20 for each primary defensive rifle/carbine
11/17/2008 1:37:08 PM EDT
[#35]
5 pistol
10 rifle

As a minimum.

More is better and enough is not enough
11/17/2008 1:39:58 PM EDT
[#36]
If it is a combat weapon of any kind, it's a minimum of 10 per long gun and 5 per pistol. If I can swing 10 per pistol, I'll do that.

For everything else (bolt actions, 10/22's etc.) it's 3-5 minimum.
11/17/2008 1:41:47 PM EDT
[#37]
Depends on what you use it for.  My buckmark only has the magazine that is in it.  For my primary defensive handgun I have 9.
11/17/2008 1:45:34 PM EDT
[#38]
As everyone says, 10 for each rrifle. 6 per pistol. I'm a mag-o-holic so my numbers are well above that.....WELL above that.

If more mags was as simple as picking up the phone and ordering, I could live with a relative handful.

Since our mag future is insecure, it leads to mag anxiety, which leads to mag whoredom.

For example, I bought into FAL rifles during the ban, just because the mags could be had at reasonable prices.  I also had a huge excess of AR15 mags (bought at cheap prices), but since any mag sold couldn't be replaced at a reasonable cost, I hung on to them all.  When the prices dropped, it wasn't worth it to sell them.

As a rule of thumb, I feel a minimum of 10 rifles mags (full load + some spares), and 5 pistol mags (one in the weapon, 2 on the belt, 2 spares) seems reasonable.

All of them.
11/17/2008 1:56:24 PM EDT

10 for rifles
5 for full-size pistols
3 for smaller pistols

there is no such thing as too many mags. It's all about priorities and money. It's no good if you have 1 AR and 100 mags if you have no ammo. It's no good to have 1 AR, 100 mags, 10,000 rounds and no spare parts. It's all a balance.

You need short range defense, concealable defense and enough ammo to get home, medium and long range defense and the ability to sustain what you think is worst case possible.

All that varies from person to person. I guess it all depends on your outlook and how likely you think certain scenarios are.

edit: what is the point of being well armed if you have no fire protection, no food, no water, no medical supplies, no warm cloths, no bare essentials to survive, no spare cash.

it's all about priorities, and how much money you want to devote to preparing for what you are trying to prepare for. unless of course you just want to be a mag whore and make an ammo fort to show pics on arfcom.

I went to recount my mags because of this thread and I keep losing Glock  17 mags FUCK!11  Now lost 3 or 4 mags in 2 years
11/17/2008 2:06:25 PM EDT
[#44]
20 per rifle     -semi auto
3 per rifle       -bolt actions and 22lr's
5 per handgun

Minimum!

I still need another for my bolt gun.

and i only have one for my Siaga 12

This is the part the arfcom scenario-builders never think about.

I suspect that many who are well armed are also well supplied.

I also suspect that in a complete breakdown scenario, those who are well armed will, by virtue of being able to offer protection, find themselves well supplied with food and other recompense.   And in an "every man for himself" scenario, e.g., post nuclear bomb, etc., the armed man will  have little difficulty taking what he needs, as well as hunting for sustenance.

You have to have the pistol to go along with the magazines???

Bummer.... dude...
11/17/2008 2:50:12 PM EDT

My rule just got bumped from 10 per gun to 12.
11/17/2008 2:52:07 PM EDT
[#49]
For pistols I shoot primarily for fun at least half-a-dozen mags..

Twice that for serious shooters...

These days I'd like to have a couple dozen per gun, but money's got to go towards feedin' em and growing the collection too..
11/17/2008 2:53:25 PM EDT

5 per pistol ,10 per rifle
