Heh. I love these SHTF threads. I dunno about you guys but I WOULDN'T want to live in a SHTF situation where I would have to hunt to survive and build my own little huts for shelter for the rest of my life.

Although, it never hurts to be prepared.

many factors:
Your location
Location of your destination
Distance between the two
Season
Number in your party.

You are going to want to keep your gear to a minimum. You are in transit to a planned retreat or bug out location. Weapon, ammo, food, water.
These guys that say you should carry 30 mags and engage in gun battles the entire distance are on drugs. You have mags and weapons to get you out of  a jam and help ensure that you get to your destination. Getting into gun battles is the last thing you want to do.

How often does life care about what you want?

People don't prepare because they want to live out a mad max movie.

Well, a few do, but not the vast majority.

The vast majority of people who prepare do so out of the simple realization that bad things can happen, and that basic precautions are justified time and again.

OP, poke through the SHTF forum here.  Outdoors->Survival and Preparedness and Zombies.  You'll find a lot more discussions about food, water, radios, shelter, and medical care, than you will about guns or ammo.

+1 1 knife and maybe iodine tablets.

You can find water, you can shoot your meal, but you'll have problems keeping a wound  healthy, you could run out of ammo if you bring too little.
Light? Avoid low light situations, but having a light wouldn't hurt.

Absolute minimum gear for me:
Rifle
ammo
knife

What Foxnews_FTW's end of days john connor fighting the machines zombie apocalypse load out looks like?
-rifle
-rifle mags
-pistol
-pistol mags
-bowie knife

in the pack:
-iodine tablets
-3x 50 round boxes of ammo
-cleaning kit
-sharpening stone (small)

oh and a good set of these

We aren't discussing a video game here. I assume that you want to get to where you are going in one piece, with no holes in you. Getting shot in a SHTF scenario is not going to be a fun situation for you to be in.

if TSHTF I ain't got nowhere to go so I'm setting right here with my neighbors.  unless it's mandatory evac of the entire island.  that would be an unworkable and ugly mob scene.  might as well kick back with a mai tai and toast the mushroom cloud.

1x pair of boots- have to be khaki desert style, danners or converse
1x 511 tactical pants in OD or khaki
