I always loved how they turned a pot smoking song into a children's song and cartoon.  Apparently parents don't listen to the lyrics that they are singing.

It was mandated by a higher authority, it keeps balance in the universe.

FYI, there is a guy down the hall from me that flew on Spooky.  He has a 20mm empty as a pencil holder on his desk.

It was never a pot smoking song, that is pure BS. My father sent me that on a (reel to reel ) tape from Vietnam(Republic of) in 1965...do a little research.

That AC-130A is know AFAIK as "The First Lady"; tail number 53-0129.

armed with two 7.62mm miniguns, two 20mm miniguns and two 40mm Bofors cannons.

The current AC-130U carries a 25mm Vucan, a 40mm Bofors cannon and a 105mm Howitzer, but the AF is replacing the vulcan and Bofors with two 30mm chain guns and retaining the 105mm howitzer.

What's the prefix "A" stand for when used in reference to aircraft? Just some way to denote that it's a gunship as opposed to a regular plane? As in AC-130 and AC-47.

Came to fly the evening sky, in a land called Vietnam.

and U.S. grunts would shout with joy, when Puff shot out her flames."

D'oh, seems kind of obvious in hindsight! Especially with the A-10 and all. Oh well.

Thanks for the quick answers guys! I love ARF, not just a bunch of dude's who read it somewhere, but real BTDT experienced and informative guys. Thanks again to all who served.

Strings?  DUH, when smoking pot, I NEVER utilized string!

Sealing Wax? To seal the paper to the dowels I guess?

It wasn't about drugs. For gawd sakes. It was a child friendly folk tune. I really liked it when I was little.

Fun fact - this is one song that is pretty much guaranteed to make me cry.

There is one other that does the same thing to me.

There are a few others that will choke me up - esp drunk - but only 2 that will make be bawl in the middle of the day.

I asked my resident pot smoker. He said it's a pot smoking song with some religious tones.

However, not the point of the thread.

Great picture.  I wish I had been more into photography during my military service.  I could have had a lot of cool pictures.

A small team of VC set up shop in the hills near Nha Trang that night and lobbed in a few mortar rounds and a couple of rockets.  No big deal.  I don't remember anybody being hurt.  Puff was on station and went to rain down hell on the little sonofabitches.

By the time Puff showed up the attack was pretty much over and I had time to grab my camera.

I put the camera on a sandbag and took the picture.  The bright lights are flares.

Whenever I look at that picture I can still remember the sound of the miniguns.  It was loud a couple of miles away.  I would have hate to been under that.

Very effective weapon system.
