Do you think African Americans voted for OBAMA b/c he is black?

Edit: I vote YES.

[#1]
There's a few articles I've read in the local paper in the past few days that would lead me to believe that a lot of them did, yes.
11/9/2008 5:27:20 AM EDT
[#2]
They sure as hell didn't vote for him because he is white.

Duh!

[#4]
Uh.................Yeah.

I work with a black female. She is a attorney and has always considered herself "conservative". According to her she has voted "mostly" republican for her entire life. She was a volunteer for Obama.

What can we conclude from this - If she considers herself "convservative", has voted "mostly" republican, and is involved in law enforcement, why the hell else would she vote for Obama? Yep, cause he's black.
11/9/2008 5:37:29 AM EDT
[#5]
Can you blame them?  The Irish voted for Kennedy.  I hear the Greeks voted for Dukakis.

I have to agree fulllly. Duh! Most of the ones I work with said it was because it was "Historic". It still means the same thing but it made them feel validated.

I'm still cracking up over Conservativeblkfem (sp?) saying that she was sick of people asking her if she was proud and asking them in response if they were proud when Condoleezza Rice was appointed Sec. of State. LMAO!

I also think so.  It is just plain stupid wrong in my opinion.  Personally I would have absolutely no problem voting for a black conservative over a white liberal any day of the year and twice on Election Day.  Sorry, I couldn't help but get a dig in there!
11/9/2008 6:07:06 AM EDT

So does it make the black people who voted for Obama racist because they only voted based on skin color?
11/9/2008 6:08:04 AM EDT

82-0.

Clean sweep

Racism is still alive and well in this country...

Do I think African Americans voted for Obama because he is black?

Yes, I do.

I was talking to a friend who over heard a conversation by a black man..........

“People look at me differently now that we have a black President.”

That pretty much defines the term.

That is the most redundant question that has ever been asked here.

African Americans by in large vote Democrat anyway, but there is no question more of them turned out this year because of his race.
11/9/2008 6:14:14 AM EDT
[#14]
They went from 80% voting democrat to 98% democrat, and that's just the small percentage of black people who voted in previous elections.
Now, those votes can be listed as party loyalty.  They were voting for Obama before he even announced his candidacy.

The other 18%, including all those people who never registered or voted before, are certainly suspect.

Identification with the Democratic candidate went from low 80% to nearly 100%

Also, according to some measures the black vote went from 6% of the total to 10%.

As Obama was up by only a mere 6% in the popular vote, that could have very easily changed the results of the election.

Oh, but wait, it's because the elusive youth vote showed up in huge numbers...

This thread appears to be splitting hairs, IMO.  90% of African-Americans vote democrat year after year after year*.  Then 95% or more vote for Barry.  So does that mean 5% are "racist"?  Would we expect different from any other ethnic group in a similar situation?

Does it really matter?  Regardless of the BHO factor, the Republicans need to come up with something that appeals to this (relatively) large portion of the population.  Simple fact.

*In presidential elections, IIRC.

More important is the NUMBER of blacks who turned out to vote. A white candidate would certainly not have mobilized them in numbers so much greater than usual.

Like a white guy would have been elected with virtually no record, questionable citizenship, known associations with thugs, hatemongers, racists and murderers and a stated agenda that seeks an immediate shift to the policies in places like Europe, Russia or Venezuela

It just dawned on me the other day why Obama won - it's not mainly that black people voted for him because they don't make up that large a percentage of the population.  What did it is the number of white people who voted for him because he's black.

These people were willing to overlook his far left radical views in exchange for the first black president.  That I cannot understand. I certainly have nothing against a black man, black woman,  white woman, or green chicken for president as long as they're qualified and have rational views.  But to vote a Marxist into office just because he's black is truly foolish and dangerous.

Very debatable.

The greater amount of money, volunteers, and voters on BHO's side could very arguably have done so, and he picked up scads of those things based solely on the fact that he is blakcer than McCain.

I realize you have some sort of intense love for the guy, but lead the fanboyism aside and actually realize that aside from the huge amount of votes alone he got, he received an enormous amount of other support solely because he was black.

I will agree that more blacks voted in this election than have in previous elections.  I will also agree that those who voted in this election and have never previously voted did so in large part due to the fact that Obama is black.

What you need to concede to me is that the great majority of blacks were previous voters and voted 88% Democratic in the last election.

Race hurt Obama in some states and helped him in others.  If you think the fact that he is black is what won the election for him, you are simply ignoring all the other factors in the world right now.  Any viable Democratic candidate who ran as flawless a campaign as Obama did would have won this election.

There is no need for a concession because you are wrong.

Everyone knows black voters are overwhelmingly democratic.

However, when you draw a HUGE number of otherwise non-voters out because you are black, it is safe to say that the black vote is going to you because you are black.

Also, the black vote, I would think, is going to be much larger than the anti-black vote, which is decidedly small. Remember how the Bradley effect didn't take place?

With a popular vote that close, after 8 years of Bush and an overwhelming media support, it's pretty sad that Obama couldn't do better than he did. A popular vote within 6%?

Please.

Puleeeeze, folks.

Blacks have tradtionally voted democrat because they get handouts from them

This time, blacks voted for Hussein because he is a black guy who will give them handouts.  Then factor in the "this validates me as a black person" and you get the full picture.

Is this really that complicated?

Have you even looked at turnout demographics from the election?

African American turnout went up to 13% of total votes from 12% total votes.  Do you think that swung the election?  If so, please explain how.

If you are looking for the category that won this election for Obama, it is young, educated people.

I've seen turnout information all over the map. To believe your stat, I suppose I'd have to fall for the NYT polls calling the election at near 15% for Obama.

Quite frankly, many states showed more pronounced differences than others, and if you don't believe the jump from 88% to nearly 100 was based on race, then I suppose I will have to retract my previous statement about you not being a total idiot.

African American support jumped from 88% to 95%.  They made up 13% of the voting block in this election and made up 12% of the voting block in 2004.  This 7% jump in support from the African Americans added with the increased turnout equates to another 1.8% of the overall vote versus 2004.

ETA:  88% of 12=10.56
        95% of 13=12.3
12.3-10.56=1.79% of new vote for Obama

The fact that you are admittedly guessing about this 100% figure shows that you have not looked at any post election demographics.

I'll spell it out for you one more time.  The youth vote is what made this election what it was.

People under 30 voted 50-50 for Bush and Gore in 2000 and 54% for Kerry in 2004.  In contrast, this year they voted 2-1 for Obama.

The silver lining, if there is any, is that I strongly suspect that they will soon become disillusioned young voters.  They will soon see BHO as a flailing failboat, much like Carter was, IMHO.  Ironic too, that he is now the 'establishment', and no longer the 'outsider'.  Nothing trumps novelty like mundacity.

They'll vote democrat until they get their first real job and see the withholding amounts.
Worked for me.
