say you have a cylinder filled with air. a linear spring is attached to the piston, but in state one it is doing no work on the system. it is originally at pressure1=p1=200kpa, and volume1=v1=.2m^3, heat is added until pressure is p2=900kpa, and volume is v2=.5m^3

using (P1+P2)/2 * (V2-V1) we find boundary work of 165kJ.

how much of that boundary work is applied to the spring?
do you use P1 times the change in volume?
or is all the work applied to the spring?

I just dont get it.
