I'm pretty damn sure I have a virus on my computer. I get random pop-ups every 10-45 seconds or so it seems. I also keep getting a "Windows Registry Defender" popup as well.
When I DO get a popup, I usually just hit ctr-alt-dlt and end process. It usually work but sometimes when I do end process, it closes all the windows I have open. I'm clueless when it comes to computer problems. I have AVG and ran it, AdaWare, Spybot search and destroy, CCleaner and none of it is helping really. I DL'd the newest Firefox but I am going to back all of my info (hopefully I get all of it) but I don't think it's going to help. I am running Internet Explorer 6 I think. I haven't updated it to 7 or whatver is out now. |

Welcome to the club. It has been going around. the people who made the virus are the ones who are telling you to pay them $40 for the program to get rid of it.
Nice huh. Go to here and download this. Use the quick scan, cuz the detailed scan takes like 6 hours....but WILL find everything malwarebytes, anti-malware program. after spending $30 on Zone Alarms anti-virus, They told me they could not delete this virus and to go here and get the FREE download.... I needed anti-virus anyway...but man I feel stupid. |

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ Does okay
So Does http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html ETA.... NOD32 would also prevent this from happening. |
| All the private computers I mess with get ZoneAlarm free firewall, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, and Avast! anti-virus. Update them all, run them, and then Microsoft Updates every Tuesday night-Wednesday. Also run Housecall from trendmicro once in a while. windows 95, 98, dump the computer and pick up anything with XP or Vista. In Vista watch out for 64bit operating systems. Some drivers and software can be a bitch. |

here is your prescription:
If you have Norton, uninstall it. Download, Install and update these Programs. Then Run Windows Update. Firefox 3 (use this to surf the net, not IE) No Script add on (follow usage instructions, or you will think you have problems CCleaner (run once a week) Avast 4 free And If you must use spyware detector programs, then use these approved versions: the real ADAWARE can be found here the real Spybot SD can be found here |

Quoted:
Does the virus change you desktop background to just a plain blue background with a virus warning? There is one that does, yes. Does it also remove the "Desktop" and "screen saver" entries in your "Display properties" menu (right click on desktop and hit properties) If so, then i have delt with said program before. If its the malware program im thinking of, then Spybot Seach and Destroy SHOULD get rid of everything, and also clean up the missing menu's. You can also get a program called "Dial-A-Fix" and run it. It scans registry entries, and removes harmful ones. It restores the menu's, and will also uninstall, and re-install certain windows registry entries that may have become corrupt or damaged over time. I havn't used Malware bytes or whatever before, but i hear its a pretty good program. ETA Post above mine has all the info you need |

Avast is a massive memory hog compared to AVG, and I HATE AVG. Avast runs too many side processes. Spend money on an antivirus, people. You can get a multi-year subscription on the cheap. It was mentioned in the thread, and I also recommend ESET NOD32. Easily the best anti-virus I've used, and Symantec Endpoint Protection is a close second. Both of them detect most stuff early, instead of letting it slip by and getting it later. |
