Both of my grandpas are deceased, and I got to thinking about them recently.

I'm on a mission to dig up some photos of them.
While I'm digging, go ahead and post some photos of your grandpas (grandma's too).

Share a story if you'd like.

He was one of the greatest men I have ever known.

I LOVE nose art.  They liked 'em pointy in those days didn't they?   And I really like the one of the B-29 pilot using the propeller as a Lazyboy. Just look at that grin! I think he kinda hot.

I have a picture of my Grandfather in his Coast Guard uniform; he spent the war annoying German submarines off the coast of North Carolina.  If I can get by the bank and get it out of the safety deposit box in time, I'll post it.

GREAT THREAD!

My grandfather was right too young for WWII.

By the time Viet-Nam rolled around he was too old.

Don't think I have any pictures of him.

My other grandfather lives in Colombia still.

Haven't seen him in years.

I have very few photos of my grandparents. Never met the grandparents on my fathers side, on my mothers side my grandma died in the 80's and my grandpa died in 1999 at the age of 91.

Grandma during WW2:

Grandpa in 1968:

He was too young to fight in WW1 and too old in WW2, he spent most of his life working as a gardener.

I have no electronic images of my Grandpa, but he was a great man.  After he died, we found seven patents for torpedo design improvements in his belongings, dating from the 1940s.  He helped make US torpedoes effective in WWII.

My maternal great grand father (mom's dad's dad)

EDIT:  Found another picture of the above with his wife as a young man.  My grandfather wasn't born yet

My paternal great grand father (dad's dad's father) - Gettysburg veteran.

My maternal grand father -  I really miss this guy.  Died when I was 12.  He's the one that's responsible genetically for making me a "gun person" Had a great wood and gun shop that a lot of WWII vets hung out in.  Man, that place was a great place for a kid!

My maternal grand mother when she was a little girl.  Both her and her husband (above) lived a hard but good life.  They lost their first son during the war.  He is still in France.

Great thread.

RIP JCS Sr.

I believe this is him on either his Indian or his Harley, early 1940's. (I'm not a bike guy, but know he had several of each)  He was definitely a "Wild One" sort of charachter.

General John D. Lavelle, USAF, took command of the 7th Air Force in Saigon on July 29, 1971. General John Ryan, the Chief of Staff, Air Force, fired him on March 26, 1972. Lavelle agreed to retire. Ryan and the Congress reduced his retirement rank two grades, to two-star major general, unprecedented in our history. The "charge" was that he had ordered unauthorized bombing attacks of North Vietnam. There was no legal proceeding. He was tried in the court of public opinion and accused of having disregarded civilian control of the military. General Lavelle died on a golf course seven years later. White House tapes recently have been released that irrefutably show the attacks he ordered were authorized, by President Nixon.

Thank you.
He is the only 4 star General without his picture hanging in the Pentagon, but since the release of the tapes we have been working hard to change that.

Here's a few more...

I believe he is wearing a flak jacket in those pics (can't really tell, not an expert on those things)...

He said he acquired one (he was a supply sergeant) because they were getting shelled by Chinese mortars. He loaned it to a friend who was going out on patrol. His friend was killed while wearing it...

There's some more interesting stories. Probably should type them up some day. He passed away in January (two weeks after my grandmother died) so all I have to go on is memory now.

Grandpa and Grandma McNamara in the early 1980's
Don't have any pictures of my other grandparents on my computer
Both sets of grandparents were farmers, both lost their farms. Grandpa Thomas lost his hogs to disease and had to sell off the farm, Grandpa McNamara lost his farm to Eminent Domain. The gov placed a resevoir in it's place.

My pap served in WWII and the Korean War. He earned many medals including two distiguished service crosses. He was an ornery character and was alot of fun to be around. He was also a great grandfather and was the first person to teach me to shoot and also taught me to hunt.

My Belgian grandmother (my mother on the left):

She claims she saw Hitler talking to a woman on the back of a parked train next to the farm she was living at when. It was probably just an officer but she insist it was him.

She was arrested multiple times by the Germans during the war for refusing to do forced labor and was constantly in hiding when the lawyers got her out of jail.
