| When you buy a rifle and they have to do a background check and all that, does that firearm you purchase go on any record that you own a particular rifle? Meaning, if you go to a gun store and by an AR15 and you go through the background check does the government have you on file now for owning an AR15? Or does that only work with when you have a handgun which must be registered? |

I know someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the NICS form, the state background check form (should you have one), and the ATF form 4473 all record the type of firearm and the serial number. So, yep, the government will know you own an AR-15. Been awhile since I've purchased; far too long |

If just doing a NICS check and no other info to state, the Feds will not know what you have other than you just bought a long gun. The NICS info is only kept for 48 hours the 4473 goes into your dealers file. The only way they would find out you have it is if it turned up at a crime scene and was traced back to your dealer, who in turn would give up your info. Smoe states have a contact point for the check and require more info, but if it just the FBI NICS check then NO. |
