Will Tannerite propagate the explosion through a narrow tube, sort of like detcord? My question comes from this: say I need to move a big rock, I put the major charge under the rock, then run a pipe filled with Tannerite to the surface, and shoot that. I'm guessing that the explosion on the surface would travel down the pipe and set off the major charge. |

I imagine it would. Tannerite is set off by the pressure of the round hitting it and starting the reaction. One would assume that given the nature of the reaction that if you shot the tube that's full of tannerite that it would propagate down the tube and into the main charge. It doesn't matter whether you shoot a pop bottle or a 5-gallon bucket of tannerite. The entire thing blows up. The point at which the bullet hits starts the reaction and it continues throughout the charge until it consumes it all. Now, sure, there is a little that is blown off without detonating, but a 5-gallon bucket full gives one heck of a larger boom than a film-canister full. Give it a shot and let us know... or better yet, post video! ETA: You'd probably better use some sort of plastic/rubber pipe as your "tannerite fuse"... I wouldn't use metal. |
AWESOME ![]() The smile and camera did it for me

+1 Definitely film it... |
The BATFE is not amused. ![]() |
LMAO, of couse the camera is mandatory since this is arfcom.

Yes, it will. I have used it to detonate a charge through a half inch tube. The three pound charge of ammonium nitrate/nitromethane detonated just fine. I also used it with primacord to detonate dynamite. Yes, I was licensed. I have used it legally privately and in law enforcement. |
Depends on the VoD of tannerite (its just Al w/ NH4NO3 right?) From a science perspective, true "detonation" explosions can just from the shock wave produce sympathetic detonation in sensitive compounds that are close enough. I wonder of a Tannerite type substance would be sensitive enough. You may consider whether another NH4NO3 mixture (such as one with nitromethane or fuel oil) would be. I just don't know. As for propagating the explosion through a tube, I'd say I'm pretty sure that it won't work once the tube gets long enough. Tannerite has a slow enough VoD that I'd expect the tube to be blow apart and the shock wave front to be interrupted before it could reach the target charge. How long is too long? I don't know. Frankly, the set up sound dangerous. You've got the blast impact of the rock shattering, you've got shrapnel from the tube, and you're having to shoot, you know, a gun at a rock (anyone remember the .50 ricochet video? This sounds like something to just call a licensed blasting company. They'll hit it with some high tensile stuff and an electronically triggered cap from far far away. This is one where Tannerite just doesn't seem to be the right tool for the job. |

Tannerite will sympathetically set off another bottle of Tannerite sitting nearby. |
OMG the dead dog! I can't breathe!
