Concrete truck drivers are laid off every night & rehired the next day, technically. Been that way for years & years. Almost a mix between employees and contractors. They never officially fire you, nor do they actually hire you. You keep working for them on a seniority list as union employees, called in by seniority.

The bottom guys have been missing some work for some time now. I am 11/28 at my site, ?46?/105 master list. So far I havent missed a day, hell I have worked as high as #5 at my plant in the last couple weeks. It is slowing down though and really getting interesting.

My old company would offer layoffs to let guys draw unemployment. This company will do nothing to help anyone but themselves. Tey force the bottom guys in on Saturday to screw them out of their unemployment. Fuxxors.

Same here.  Sure, they could hire someone else to do my job, but it would take months and months of training for them to get anywhere near my level of familiarization, and the company would have to shell out more money for someone else who is qualified.

Plus, I work for a utility company.  People will always need power and water.

I would fully expect cutbacks to hit me close to first.  The C-level folks where I work think that they only really need the VP of IT and a bunch of $30k a year helpdesk people.  They have gotten rid of almost all of the UNIX, storage, and senior Windows folks before, and then appear to have been surprised when everything cratered.  We were told that we would have to tighten our belts on Friday, despite being in the oilfield and doing very well.  So, we may not get any of the things that I have been planning to dig out of the hole my borderline-criminal predecessor dug for the department in the three years prior to my arrival.  Lovely!  And the VP of IT has a finely honed sense of self preservation and will agree with the C-level guys in the blink of an eye that they can survive for a year with a handful of employees (covering thousands of people in eight countries) if he thinks that it will preserve his bonus.

Perhaps it's time to get that graduate degreeand tune up German cars part time until Obama is out of office ...

I'm a corporate accountant.  However, if things get really bad and the company starts shuttering entire divisions (not branches or centers... divisions), then there might be too many of us.

So no, it's not entirely recession proof.
