Was just surfing ARFCOM on Mozilla 3.0, Mozilla started to run REAL slow. Had to click on a button like three times to get things to respond. So, I opened up an ARFCOM window in Internet Explorer.

This is where everything goes to hell.

Entire computer starts running slow, and I start getting popups like mad. First time in months this has happened. I open the task manager, and Mozilla is taking 500,000k to run. It also changes my desktop background from a nice picture of KevinB's AR ( the one with the Magpul CTR stock, KAC URX rail, S&B optic ), to a blue screen with an option to 'click here for spyware removal'.

Then somehow my automatic updates for XP turns off. Then, Internet Explorer starts opening itself to a 'internet speed checker' popup-type window. Efforts to close it freeze the computer, and efforts to un-freeze it by opening the task manager make it worse. Restarts do no better.

So I bought the full version of Ad Aware and downloaded it, and it finds a bunch of infections and removes it. 'Cool,' I think. But just when I think everything is fine, I restart the system and it happens all over again, more popups, more of those 'Internet speed checker' windows. No pron related ones, just general bullshit.

So I run Ad Aware in a deep scan, it catches a bunch more, and it has slowed things down, but I'm still getting the occasional self-opening window, Mozilla is running slow as a mother, and I'm out $65.

What the hell is there left to do? I need a nuclear option here folks. Not tannernite, but something that will purge this computer of all evil. For the record, its a Sony VIAO FJ-270 that has worked flawlessly for me for over two years.

Please help!

Agreed.  Try that.  If it doesn't work.  Reinstall windows.

Kind of random but wtf.  Why does everyone have problem like this???  I don't have a anit-virus of any sort and have NEVER had this kind of problem.  My advise.  STOP LOOKING AT PORN!!!

I recently had a virus do the same thing, if you check your task manager are you showing a sprtcmd.exe running ??  What about if you restart, does it show this file having to close before you restart ???

I think there is another member that recommended malwarebytes, or maybe some other program.

Hmmm, okay, work in progress. Update shortly.

Shit, I accidentally reposted this. Mods, my apologies in advance.

here is your prescription:

If you have Norton, uninstall it.

Download, Install and update these Programs.  Then Run Windows Update.

Firefox 3 (use this to surf the net, not IE)

No Script add on (follow usage instructions, or you will think you have problems

CCleaner (run once a week)

Avast 4 free

And If you must use spyware detector programs, then use these approved versions:
the real ADAWARE can be found here

the real Spybot SD can be found here
