I want to put some recess lights up in my living room.  I bought six of these link

to go around my living room.  I've been thinking however that this might be more light than I need.  Does anyone know how much light each on will put out?  For example one light will make a beam that shines down how far?

Thank you for the help.

Put them on a dimmer.

You can tailor the light by the wattage and type of bulbs used.

I have 18 total in my basement in 3 different rooms.

Mine are similar.

The people that owned the house before me liked lights I guess.

I could take pics.

Shit, I thought this thread was about low-calorie peanut butter cups. My prayers would have been answered.

Use a 60 watt bulb and put them on a dimmer. I have those in our master bedroom without a dimmer. Kick them on in the morning and its like waking up on the surface of the sun. I need to buy that damn dimmer

I usually use metal halide on playgournds..

Seriously, your effective light output will vary on the refractor, the bulb, and the distance from the floor and the reflectivity (think color) of the room.  There are a lot of programs out there to help you.  I would contact you closest lighting center and they can probably help you.

That being said, since you already have these, it might be more of a trial and error at this point with wattage and reduced wattage bulbs.

I'd like to see this.

But yeah, I would put them all in and just tone the wattage of the bulbs down. These aren't exactly spotlights in the first place.

How much light beams down on for each one?  I too light likes [I have winter depression issues].  I don't want the house to look like its under spot lights - I want it to be warm and cozy but well lite.  The box recommends 60 watt bulbs, which is what I purchased.

See now I happen to be somewhat of an expert on low calorie peanut butter cups.  What is it exactly that you're praying for?

At 8' hight, a typical can light makes a 5' circle of light with a 9' circle of "wash" light. Try not to place your cans more than 6'-8' apart.

But what do I know, I'm just a woodworker.

I'd rather only put in four lights if I only need four. [idea]

There is no such thing as too much light.(Especially when you get older )
Put them on a dimmer. There are a ton of lights with different wattage and beam focus,it really depends on what you're trying to light.General lighting, task lighting, wall wash for pictures, pathways, etc.
Do your part for the economy, hire an electrician.

I have no "spot-light" like effects from any of my recessed cans.

Also depends on mounting heigth and your choice of trim. Some trims will limit the wattage rating for the can.

HALO Trim Specs

My company has installed hundreds of these (HALO H5RICAT) cans with various trims at different heights.

Feel free to IM me for advice on lamp choice to correspond with your choice of trim.

My cans came with their own white baffle trim.  I thought long and hard about the more decorative trims [like above, actually the one pictured above I almost purchased] but decided against it because my ceiling is realitively low [its 8ft and I'm 6' and my kids are even taller].  I thought the white baffle trim would be less intrusiveness.

Thank you Osprey21.  I'll definitely IM you as things get closer to happening.

Electrician here.

I would say depends on the size of the room in question.

As others here have said, I prefer to over light and room and then back it down with lower wattage lamps and/or a dimmer.

Also, the type of lamp you select can vary.  You can use flood or spot lamps to tailor it more to your liking.

If its a smaller room, I would be more worried about excess heat than excess light.  I have eight in my living room, and while I like the light when I want it bright, the wife unit sometimes bitches about the heat.

I say hang'em up and then tailor it to your liking.

If those trims are HALO trims, there 'should be' a label on them that gives you the lamp type/wattage for the recess can they're being used with.

And you're more than welcome.

The box recommends 60 watt bulbs.  The room is 10 feet by 9 feet.  I believe four lights would be plenty.

There's no mention of HALO but if it is suppose to look like an inverted halo than it probably is.

The trim I posted is very low profile.

I've got a washroom that's 11 x12 with six 6" inch cans.

It's just right.

Trust me....you'll regret not putting enough in.  They should be about 5 feet apart but going less is fine.  For a normal size room that you will use often then 6 is a good choice.

Yes but it would stand out and I felt [maybe wrongly - I don't know.  I'm more of a redneck than a gay interior decorator] that it would make the ceiling look lower.  My room is painted dark red with wood trim.  The ceiling is painted a Navajo white.  The colors came with the house and in my opinion make the room look smaller and darker.

I don't have heat in my living room so if it heats the room up more power to em [in the summer lack of light is not an issue].

I want the lights to go around my sofa [its a sectional sofa] so I can read.  There is no lights in the room right now the only light comes from the dining room light and it makes too much of a shadow to read.

I measured two feet away from the wall and if I put one at two feet and another three and a half feet away from the first it would go to the middle of my sofa [or where the sofa makes it L turn].  That would allow me to put another light two feet from the middle and a forth light three feet from it.

I can't figure out how to put more lights in unless I put the lights two feet apart?
