I might be mistaken, but I was under the impression that this saying was from the days of the Garand, when a soldier in basic training had to lock the op rod/bolt to the rear, then load an en-bloc clip?

If I were to tell your average shooter to lock a magazine, they probably wouldn't have any idea of what the hell I was saying, you know?
