How was Todd Blackburn a Ranger (or in a Ranger Batt.) if he hadn't been to Ranger school?

Ranger school and Ranger Indoctrination Program are different. RIP is like tryouts, to see if they want you to be a Ranger. If you make it, you assigned to a Ranger battalion. Then, a year or so later you have to goto Ranger school to earn the Ranger tab, I believe if you fail to graduate Ranger school, you are sent off to a Regular Army unit.

Ranger Indoctrination Program

Edit: Ranger School is just another Army trade-school. Not all Rangers have to go through it. IIRC, mostly just Officers and some NCO's go to Ranger School.

They go to RIP, then bat, then school when they get their slot.

The Ranger Regiment shares a similar name with Ranger School, but they are two different organizations. Ranger School is not required to become a member of the Ranger Regiment, nor is regimental membership required to attend Ranger School.
