Anyone ever see this movie? It's the begining or has something to do with the Hanible Lecter/Silence of the Lambs movies.

Maybe  I should watch it sober......

Yes, and in some ways was a better film. I thought Lector as played by Brian Cox was more scary than Hopkins...cooler, more disaffected.

I liked Joan Allen as the blind girl, too...one of her first big roles.

That was Michael Mann's direction, btw. Red Dragon is a good movie, but I still prefer the original.

Basically the Silence of the Lambs story starts as Manhunter ends.

Its the book Red Dragon in its first movie incarnation. Technically its the prequel to Silence of the Lambs. Brian Cox is an awesome Lector and "psychologically" plays it better than Hopkins. Don't watch it on TV, go rent it or buy the DVD.

Great movie. The book was better, but it's hard for a movie to live up to an image that a book builds in one's head.

It  was still a great movie with a lot of great film-making. Tom Noonan was scary as fuck.

William Peterson's character in in CSI is probably influenced by Will Graham.

I thought Red Dragon was well done, but I prefer Manhunter.

From what I've read Thomas Harris prefers Red Dragon. Which is kind of funny because I think most average movie watcher prefers Manhunter, from what I can tell.

Bit more of a reach for me. Related but CSI is forensic technology driven for the most part (how, what, where, when). The Hannibal Lecter series is more forensic psychiatry driven (the mind/ the why).

CSI first aired October of 2000.  Manhunter hit the theaters in 1986.

Michael Mann wrote the script for Manhunter based on Thomas Harris' novel.  There's no indication either of them have any association with CSI the TV series.

I seriously doubt if you took 1000 people and had them watch both back to back that more people would prefer the 80's version.

The "average" movie watcher has probably doesn't remember or hasn't seen Manhunter.

Not long ago, I came to the realization that the story "Red Dragon" is a complete waste of time... in any incarnation.

Here's why: (SPOILERS)

Nothing in the story has to happen. Nothing Will Graham does puts him any closer to the killer. The whole "investigation" is superfluous. In the end, he realizes the importance of the home movies, and off they go to catch the killer. He never really had to leave the FBI's evidence room. In fact, he could have figured it out in his first day on the case.

(SPOILERS END)

Once I realized this, I felt kind of cheated... and my affection for the book/films waned significantly.

Any film where the .44 Special takes center stage is one that deserves an Oscar.

anhunter is much better than Red Dragon, IMO.

I mean the people who have seen both, just like the small sample here, it seems like they prefer Manhunter for whatever reason.

Just pointing out that the author has a different view is all.
