Man, I have not put salt on food for years and I really have not missed it. There is already a ton of salt in food, so I am sure that I am getting plenty. P.S. That is Potassium Chloride. It replaces the Sodium with Potassium. |
I went dove hunting this Sep. 1st in southern AZ, the whole week before the opener they had monsoons. The mosquitos were freakin ridiculous, so I decided to put on some Off(repellent) and went about my hunt. About an hour later I'm looking at my gun((Ruger Red Label) out of boredom) and notice that the finishing and my fore grip had come off!!! I've had this gun for 8 years and can't even fathom the hours that gun has seen, and then all of a sudden this!![]() Sorry don't mean to hijack just looking for help on related scenario |
Just so I don't mosquito you. |
I only worry about catching teh OCD.

And will rust steel just as easily a NaCl. KCl is after all what corrosive ammo deposits. |
You seem like you have some kind of phobia. You may want to get that checked out before you go totally tweaked. |
Deet, the ingredient in insect repellant. removes finish from stocks in a hurry. The salt from your sweat will induce rusting of blued surfaces if let to sit. Clean water will remove the salt deposits from the metal. If your stock is like my Red Lable, it has an oil finish. You can use Tung Oil or Boiled Linseed Oil to recoat the stock. It might wind-up with a bit darker color because the wood has oxidized being eposed to air. However, the oil will protect the wood and after several thin coats it will reusme its luster. For what its worth, I look at the blemishes in finish as a part of the gun being used as intended. If you hunt kind of hard, the stock will wind-up with scratches, dents and just handling will cause wear where you hold the gun. Also a bit of spots where blood removed the blue is also a natural part of the gun being used. So, just protect the wood with some oil and if it winds up being a bit darker, so be it. You will want to make sure that the metal work is coated with a protectant (like CLP) after wiping down with a wet sponge or cloth to remove salts. |
Only if you picked up three equal lengths of grass, threw them over your left shoulder, spun in a circle three times while yelling out three times "waka waka waka", then knocked on the nearest piece of wood three times. |
Potassium chloride "used" to be reasonable. It's $20 a bag compared to $5 for salt. You do know that potassium chloride is what they use for lethal injections, if your water softner isn't setup properly, you could cause yourself long term heart damage. Regardless of either salt, you should have a reverse osmosis filter for your drinking water. As for the slimly feel, that's not from salt in the water, it's from the lack of minerals. Understand the concept of how a water softner works before you go into panic mode. |
yes. I would. because the salt in my sweat is about as bad as what you describe from the SALT in a water softener. I would just wipe it off, go shooting, and clean as usual after. but then I don't have $6000 Benelli over/under shot guns with perfect deep blueing. I have utility guns that are made to withstand normal and abnormal conditions. and blueing will actually resist salts for a period of time, that's what it's for. other wise we would not blue guns, we may just leave them raw steel. your fear is irrational. |
![]() and no, I've never had the urge to hand weapons to service people inside my house clean hands or not. |
