Using a cell phone as a modem. is it possible it do it with good bandwidth? I know Subnet does it. for his on the road with Subnet.. See im going camping this weekend with mom and I need my WoW fix.. I have a treo 650 and a cable.. So what next? |

Do you have an ISP to dial into? Just dial the number and you got it. If not, do you have internet on your phone? Do you pay for a data plan for connecting third party equipment to it? If you dont have a data plan then there are ways around it that I wont get into here and if the phone company catches you they will kill your phone service for going against their policy. Check it out here. |

Sort of depends on your carrier and phone software. Most Treo 650s are GSM, so bandwidth will be low and price will be high. I think you also need some specific software loaded on the Treo - availability depends on which OS its running. Not the best starting point quite honestly. I would suggest looking at upgrading to a Blackberry Curve or similar. |

you need an EVDO or EDGE data plan. be advised though, that is you use your cell as a bluetooth modem for your pc that you could go over the pda bandwith limit quickly. I recomend that you get a usb EVDO rev-A dongle for your pc or laptop and an unlimited data plan. also, check out clearwire.com for rural wireless |

I'd like to take this opportunity to point out how utterly pathetic it is to: 1. Go camping with your mom 2. Have the inability to function over the weekend without playing a video game 3. Disrespect yourself by admitting these issues to men on a gun website Apart from that, good luck finding what you need and have fun with your mom. |
you sir are total WIN! |

FWIW: I have a BB Curve on AT&T (EDGE). I have the unlimited data plan, but not the additional "tethering" option. I set up tethering anyway, just in case I ever need it to get me out of a hole. My only comment is that if I was paying for this service, I would be mightily disappointed. Its marginally better than dial-up, but not a lot - certainly not worth the extra $30/month that ST&T want for it. |

I have a dedicated GSM data modem, but my Razr would work just as well. In fact all I have to do is pop the sim card from my data modem in it, hook up the USB cable, and it's exactly the same thing. I get 1-1.5 mbps in real speeds with it, plenty fast for me. |
+1 I have the Curve and if I'm in Verizon's digital network I get good bandwidth over 1mb. At home outside the digital network I get around 150K. |
Umm.... ![]() I have nothing to say. |
this, |
WTF?

South Park did a classic episode on it. |

still looking for subnets answer.. and the new WotLK cinematic is up.. WoW just WoW!!! |
What carrier do you have? I used to tether my Treo 700 with PDAnet. It's possible with the 650, all you need is the data plan and the PDAnet software. http://www.junefabrics.com/pdanet/index.php |
You know, you might want to give AT&T a call, there's some kind of tethering block on the PDA plans. You have to pay extra to open the service. I can't remember the details, I have Verizon and they dont have any restrictions. But I tried to get it working on a friends AT&T phone and we never did get it to work and she didn't want to pay the extra fees. |
*snicker* He always sucks in teh n00bz. |
I know for BB the tethering is $30/month extra. (I also know it works without paying the fee ... don't know how long it would take them to notice). |
