S.M. Stirling's "After the Change" series. Pretty good stuff. Basis is that after a massive electrical storm, anything electrical stops working. The lights go off for good. But that's not it. Other stuff doesn't work, like gunpowder. No one knows why, but weapons tech has just been moved back to the middle ages. Some of it is kind of silly, like how well a group of Wiccan SCA-types do. But, some of it really shows how hard it would be to survive after the lights go out. And the types of skills that would become most useful after the power goes out. Such as hunting, making traps, being able to grow your own food, camp hygene, knowing something about horses & livestock, being able to build without mechanical tools, etc. One downside is that Stirling spends too much time discussing Wiccan traditions, beliefs, etc. I skipped one or two chapters (basically 10 pages or so) because I didn't feel like a study of Wicca. |
The ravings of a loon. ![]() Try Lucifer's Hammer. It passes the threshold of believability. |
Already read it. And Lucifer's Hammer. And Footfall and The General and The interesting thing about "After the Change" is that it brings up a lot of issues that don't get discussed enough. Such as if you have a bug-out bag...where are you bugging out to? You have a week's worth of food...where are you getting your water? And after that week...what are you going to eat (you can't eat that 10,000 rounds of ball you have stored up). Etc.... |
