Getting ready to buy a PS3, and was wondering if I really needed to 80 GB version over the 40 GB.  This will be my first game console since my old Dreamcast system, so I’m not what you would consider a big time gamer.  I don’t have any old games to worry about backward compatibility. I mainly enjoy shooters or driving and flight sims.

Do I really need the 80GB or would the 40GB be enough for my needs as described?

Thanks for your input.

If your not  a big gamer go with the 40GB.

I have the 40GB version and I really like it.

I would think that if you had no desire to play PS2 games, then to get the 40GB...

I game quite a bit and watch movies on mine.

There are a few differences, but the backward compatibility is the biggest difference. I think the 80GB also has a memory card reader, and will platy SACD audio disks. The 80GB also has 4 USB ports instead of two. I have heard the 80GB runs hotter than the 40GB, but I don't know for sure since I have a 40GB.

If you are concerned with storage space, I have read it is very easy to upgrade hard drives, though I have not done this yet to mine.

I bought the 40GB unit. I wasn't concerned about the backwards compatible thing as I still have my PS2.
Bought rock band, started downloading a lot of music and decided I wanted to upgrade to something bigger.
So now I'm running a 320 GB drive.
Plenty of space, quick and simple to swap out and does not void you warranty.
Took longer to do the back up and restore than anything.
I play a lot of games too, so I wanted the space.

I have the 40g version.

The only use it ever gets is playing blueray discs...  which I might add, it does better than the previous Samsung dedicated player I bought and returned.

If you don't already have a 1080p HDTV, you NEED to put that next on your list.

The Blueray and game picture quality is just breathtaking.

Storage capacity is only really important if you're going to be downloading lots of demos and videos from PSN

backward technology?

Who REALLY wants to play old PS2 games on a PS3.  Unless you have a 10 year old in your house that has a shit ton of PS2 games that you don't want to replace I bet backward technology is pretty much a non-issue for most people.

Wow... this is the fastest response I've ever gotten.  Had no idea there were so many PS3 users here.  This brings up another question.  First, I do have a 50" Sony 1080p HDTV with HDMI inputs, and I do plan to use it a lot as a DVD player.

Isn't the 40 GB memory for storing games as in "keeping your place" in a game if you want to pick up where you leave off?  Isn't that it's main use?  And if so, is 40GB enough to store with more than 1 game?

Thanks

Yep, I ended up filling up my 40 rather quickly cause I downloaded lots of stuff. I'd still get the 40 if I had to do it over again, the $100 you save over the 80 will buy you a much larger harddrive, I put a 250 in mine but now you can pick up a 320 for around $90.

Saved games take up very little space, what takes up the space is downloading demo's,Various game add ons, videos, you can also buy games from the PSN store and those are downloaded onto the HD.  Also a few games such as GTA and MGS install some stuff onto the HD not sure what the sizes are on those probably a couple hundred mb.

Are there any good flight sims available for PS3?

I agree, I thought people who bought the 40 gig were stupid, bacause of the non-backwards compat. issue, then I realized how stupid I was to think that, and put down the 80 gig, and bought the 40 gig. I will NEVER play another PS2 game in my life, so it's pointless to get it.

I purchsed a new 1080P TV too. MGS 4 looks incredible, but I have no desire to play it at all
I basically bought it for rockband and Blueray movies.. and I might check out GTA IV.

Yep.. we gamers are everywhere.
Yeah the main use is for games saves, game install data.
But as mentioned above, you can purchase games to download, purchase game add-ons ( like maps and stuff for games) and eventually most likely movies and music. (XBOX does the movies and music videos now and I like it).

40Gb is plenty for a while.

I bought the 40 and ended up bringing it back. The pos wouldn't play anything other than the PS3 Lego game.

Backwards compatibility is very important though if you play PS2 games. PS2's lasers have a nasty tendency to die after a few years. Memory cards are at risk too. The PS3's will last a lot longer, plus you will notice faster loading times in certain games. Shadow of the Colossus is a good example, there was a lot of annoying slowdown during the boss battles, but it's completely gone if you play it on the PS3.

Not yet.  With what that machine can do it pisses me off that we don't have a Flight Sim yet, AC6 should have been on PS3 dammit.

Head over to the Wargames forum, there are quite a few of us over there.  The game with the biggest Arfcom participation right now is COD4, there are usually 5-10 of us on there each night.  Just know that if Elderboy offers to suck you off that he isn't joking, and TLee's sperm is so powerful he has gotten three different guys pregnant through his bluetooth mic.

With Madden coming out tonight, I'm hoping there will be enough Arfcommers playing to get some games or maybe an online dynasty going.  Check out the tacked thread in there for PSN screen names and send me an invite, my PSN is exactly like my username here.

i have the 40gb version, and don't really play a lot of games and no PS2 games.

Having said that, the upscaling on the PS3 is phenomenal.

"Regular" DVDs are near 1080p quality, and I don't really miss BD when watching a regular DVD.

PS3 rocks.

I never had a game console and went with the 40GB version.  As soon as I went to rent a game I regretted it.  There were very few PS3 games and tons of PS2 games.

I have since sold it.  If I get another one it will be the 80GB version.
