I was at a local gun store today, being helped by a young guy. I figured him for 18 or so. Turns out he was 16. I was looking at Sigs and he noticed the P226 I open carry.

Him: "What Sig are you carrying?"

Me: "P226."

Him: "Is it unloaded?"

Me: "No."

Him: "Oh. You need to unload it. There's a sign on the door."

Me: "I thought that was if it was going to come out of the holster. I've open carried here many times before. That guy (I point to another employee) even complimented me on my 1911, which was cocked and locked."

Him: "Well you need to unload it. We have to know you won't shoot someone." Yes, those were his words.

Me: "OK. I'll just take my business somewhere else." I start to walk away.

Him: "Sir, wait." He asks the employee I'd pointed out if it was OK for me to carry. The guy says yes.

At least the kid apologized afterward. I ended up putting a deposit on a beautiful, almost new condition West German P228 that wasn't available for sale yet.

Its a kid who was attempting to go according to what he thought the protocol was. And then he manned up and apologized when he was wrong. Whats wrong with that?

I wouldn't have a problem with any of it except him saying that he was concerned that I would shoot someone.

Sounds like a good kid just trying to follow company policy. Not his fault the sign's on the door. This might be his first job, and he was just trying to do what a boss told him.

I have to respect any kid that age w/ a job. Even if some of them aggravate me sometimes.

I cant blame him. Not a reflection on you, but in my time working behind the counter in a gun shop, I had many people that I wanted to make sure were not going to shoot anyone.

I worked in a gun store too. I always handed weapons to customers with the actions open and the chamber in plain view. I also never flagged a customer or fellow employee. This kid cleared several guns while waving them around and flagging my chest numerous times. I also never told a customer that I was concerned about them shooting anyone. If I was, I would not hand them any of the firearms I had behind the counter.

My Brother-in-law's wife's ex (get that through your head) runs a gunshop somewhere in Cleveland.  My BIL and his wife share custody of their kids with this ex.  He often has them travel to gun shows with him and work the show with him.

They also work in the gun store with their dad on some occasions.  Its funny because I can hold a gun conversation with these kids and the oldest is 14.

Many states will allow you to work and sale gun and ammunition if you posess a waiver/note saying you are allowed to by your parents. Many stores unless they are family owned will not hire you because of liability reasons though.

You're wrong on 2 accounts here:

First, unless they changed the labor laws, I'm pretty sure 16 can work a cash register. I was working (100% legally) at a local hardware store while in high school, and I was 16. Of course, that was a few years ago.

Second, don't ever post a "just playing" comment asking if a 13 year old girl is "hot" and if he "got pics" ever again. Those types of comments don't belong on this site, General Discussion or not.

Let me put it this way, any gun store that doesn't allow its customers to carry is not a business I want to deal with.

The Sportsman's Warehouse I worked at allowed loaded carry, open or concealed, as long as it didn't come out of the holster. That's a rule I'm 100% OK with.

I wouldn't let you carry in my shop if we were open to the public unless I knew you well as a customer.

I have seen and heard of bad shit happening over the years. There have been ND's, folks pulling out their firearms ALL THE TIME, a gangbanger try to attack an employee to get his yellow form back after it was denied (that did not work out well for him), inummerable cries of racism and personal threats on employees, and so on and so on.

With dozens of firearms being waived around constantly - many of them by idiots who make a point of sweeping everyone in the shop and showing no respect for the products - no loaded firearms sounds like a great policy to me.

YMMV, and it may be different on the other end of the counter.

I never gave a shit if someone open carried in my store

just keep it in the fucking holster

really the only time I had a problem or a concern was with some uniformed LEOs
they wanted to see if a USA mags in our bargain bin would fit their berettas
one dropped this mag but did not clear the chamber and sweep the shit out of me and half the store with their finger on the trigger
the other cop said jesus christ WTF are you doing at about the same as I said would you PLEASE not point your loaded weapon at me

another was a couple armored car guys in the corner trying holsters with their loaded glocks

most guys that carried LEOs armorcar/mall ninjas/CCW etc  were useally nice enough to ask before whipping their shit out

all the other times were just when people handed me a loaded weapon they wanted to sell, trade or get repaired that happened about once a week
I'm guessing the sign about please unload your weapons was about that situation and not for people carrying
