My central A/C has been acting funny lately. Normally, the outside unit comes on and runs for about 20-30 seconds and then the blower kicks on. Lately, but only when it is semi-cool outside the fan doesn't come on for a minute or 2. Any ideas on what could be causing this difference in times? This morning the outside unit came on and ran for about 5 minutes, and the blower never came on. I finally shut the thing down. One of the things that I found out the hard way, was if you flip the fan switch on the thermostat to on, the fan does not come on. I was thinking that it could possibly be the fan contactor, or possibly the capacitor for the blower motor. I live in a semi-remote location, and the closest a/c supply is about 50 miles away. I need to get the parts before I head out there. Thanks, John |

The outdoor fan is controlled by a pressure operated fan cycling switch. It cycles the fan to keep the unit running properly when the outside temp is low. When it's cooler outside it takes a little longer for the condenser pressure to rise and thus a longer delay before the fan cycling switch to close. Could be that you are a little low on refrigerant or the switch is stuck. Put your hand on the small line coming out of the outdoor unit, if it's too hot to touch after a few minutes run time, it's a fan problem. Wait scratch all that, are you talking about the indoor fan? Think I got them mixed up |
Ok the indoor fan![]() First thing to try is jump out the indoor fan relay. Cut the power and locate the two high voltage wires on the fan relay. The relay may be part of the control board so you are going to have to read the wiring diagram to locate these wires. Jump them out and turn the power back on. If the motor is good it should run. If it doesn't, the problem is with the motor. |
