How do you date a colt pistol? I heard  they can tell you when it was made , where it was sent etc.

How can they tell you when the gun doesn't have a serial #?

Um they would need the serial number.  I dont know of any colts that were made without one.  What type of colt is it?

It's hard to tell . I think it says  .41 caliber.

The grips are black plastic and say colt.

On one side just above the grip is the small pony logo.

Where would the serial # be?

Check all over the frame including under the crane and grips.

Also check the bottom of the butt.  I googled colt .41 images and it came up with a couple like what you described.

OK. Found a few #s.

976 on the peice that slides back to open the cylider

same # on the cylider (you can't see it unless it's open)

same # with a 1 above it and to the left ( you can't see it unless it's open)

on the bottom of the grip #11 above the # 260.

it's hard to see but it looks like it says colt D A .41

on top it has colt  hart . ct. and pat. aug. 5 84 nov 6 1888

The Colt Army Special
One old Colt revolver that occasionally comes up for sale is the Army Special. The Colt Army Special is a superbly fitted handgun that was crafted by some of the finest artisans of it's day. It was developed from an 1890's Colt double action revolver frame known as the Colt "41 caliber" frame. The Army Special was available in several calibers, .41 special, .38 special, .32 WCF, among others. They were available in blue and nickel finishes.

The term "Army Special" moniker was a marketing ploy. No army ever officially adopted the revolver as a sidearm. In 1927, the Colt Army Special became the Colt Official Police with only a name change. This particular revolver is one I picked up at Kay Clark-Miculek's place for $275 a couple of years back. The prices have not changed drastically

It looks a lot like that only the grips aren't as fancy , and the horse is just above the T on the grip.

I was trying to date a Colt HBAR.  The main company will direct you to their Historical Records folks.  Quoted me a price of $100 to send me a build sheet.

How do you date a colt pistol?

Well I like to start off slow, maybe send it flowers.  If that goes over well, I invite it out for drinks or maybe dinner.  If all goes well, I'll see it about two nights a week for three weeks and if it really looks like there could be a future, I'll add another night and stop looking at other colt pistols.

But only if it puts out.

Didn't the Colt Lightning come in .41 cal? Think it was Colts first double action revolver. Then again the beer may be affecting my memory.

WildBoar , that's it only my grips say colt. But the little horse on the frame is in the right spot.
