Anyone have designs/ plans/ instructions for a do it yourself target stand that can be broken down for compact transport and storage? Something relatively inexpensive would be nice.
I know someone out there has to have something like what I'm looking for.

i think old_painless had a good design made from pvc pipes.  i also remember someone making silhouettes out of paper grocery bags, but i can't remember how it's done.

Yeah I made a frame from PVC pipes and I just duct tape a sheet of cardboard into the center.

I wouldn't take it to a big group shoot, some idiots would blow it apart. But for just me it works fine.

Check out the Box o' Truth. I made 2 out of pvc, just as O_P describes and they work beautifully.

Thanks O_P!

ETA: I think the total cost for the 2 was less than $20

What type of wood did you use? His site says "wood stakes" but I'm wondering what I could specifically purchase at a hardware store.

I made one out of PVC pipe.

It's cheap, easy to transport & set up, and if it gets shot up it's simple to repair.

They are just simple 1x2's and can be bought at any hardware/home center.  I bought precut 4 footers at Lowes for a little over a buck each. You are putting a rectangle in a round hole, but it's a nice tight fit. Also, you don't have to drive them all the way in, just a good 6-8" should be enough.

I used cheap wooden saw horses. The kinds with the legs that clamp onto the horizontal piece. Then I added some military targets. Worked great!

Get a 12''x9'' mild steel plate and then get a 2''x4'' square tube steel and weld a piece across one side of the opening to allow for it to rest on top of a 2''x4''. Then on the steel plate weld a bracket to hang on the 2x4 piece and then you have a steel target that can rest on a 2x4 that is dug into the ground.

I used some old 2x4s and sawhorse brackets made for 2x4s.  Screwed them together using cordless drill and then screwed  scrap plywood on the crossbar.

They were several years old when I started taking them to SoCal ARFCOM shoots.  They lasted 5 or 6 shoots.  I could staple targets on them, put bowling pins on top and hang pins, fire extinguishers etc.

They fold up flat or by taking a few more screws out, a pile of 2x4s.

They are heavy enough to take a bunch of hits (misses(?)) so work well with large groups with moderately novice shooters.  PVC is nice but needs to be weighted down and is not good for more than one or two hits before it gives out.  So if all the shooters are relatively competent they work.

Here is mine:
1 inch PVC tubing
2 1 inch elbows
4 1 inch T's
2 1.5 inch T's
Paper clips
zip ties

They're similar to a design on the Maryland AR shooter site.  Just cut the PVC to the length you want.  I think I have 10 bucks in this including buying the pipe cutter tool.  The oversized 1.5 inch T's allow for varying lengths.  The next one I make will probably be a little wider and I might go with larger diameter PVC.

I ended up making on of OP's. The PVC and 1x2 alone cost nearly $20! Not to mention I needed a stapler and staples.
