I went to look for a new printer for my pc and all I can find is those combo do all printers/fax/scanners. I just want a plain jane only printer which won't kill me on the print cartridges. Any recommendation?

color or monocrome?

the more expensive of a printer the less it will cost to operate

have a job or a friend that has a printer, it'll save you money and frustration.

if you do get a printer, get a laser printer.

Samsung ML-2510 is the latest of the bargain laser printers.  My ML-2010 has been bulletproof.  The cartridges are somewhat on the high side (~$85.00 IIRC), but they are good for >2000 pages and there are no inkjets to clog up.

Or buy an HP and give your money to the gungrabbers.

I am thinking of this route if I can get 3 to 4 times the print out of life of the toner verses ink jets. Thoughts?

Another vote for laser printer.   Brother is excellent and the cartridge lasts forever.  Adjust the setting to use less ink.  I've read color printers are so cheap now that when you need a cartridge just get a new printer.

Go on eBay or Craigslist and buy yourself an HP 4000-series laser printer.  18 months ago I bought a lightly used 4100TN for $300 and a high-capacity refurb print cartridge for $40.  I've printed 8250 or so pages on it and the "Low Toner" message just recently came on.

Before buying this printer, I was spending $25/week on black inkjet cartridges, so I've more than paid for the printer.  Plus, it prints 25 pages per minute and has a network port.

Inkjets typically waste over 50% of their ink keeping the nozzles clean.  The ink is squirted into a foam or fiber-filled reseviour inside the printer, which will eventually become full and resign the printer to the trash heap.  Plus the cost-per-page is crazy high.  All the money is made on the ink; the printer is sold at or below cost.

Laser is your friend.

You cant really beat these small home laser printers.  I have one that I paid 120 for 3 years ago and I still havent burned through the first toner.  I dont really print too much but I like to have it on tap for when I need it.

I would stay away from ebaying an office printer like a HP4000 or something along those lines.  Yes you get a bigger cartridge but I would bet that any printer being sold off will be about ready for a maintenance kit.  You may get the printer cheap but I can guarantee you that you will never find a maintenance kit for less than 250.

The main thing that you have to watch with the small laser printers is the replacement toner cartrige that you choose.  Watch out for the refill companies and such.  Since the cartriges have chips on them it is really easy to trash your printer with a bad refill cartridge.  Stick with a replacement by the manufacturer.

Easily.

I got about 500 pages outof my last inkjet and full-capacity toner cartridiges will last for thousands of pages. Manufacturers will very, but I would say a 10x increase in pages printed beween toner changes would not be out of the relm of possibility.

I got a Brother HL-2070N monochrome laser to replace an epson C86 inkjet so far I am extremely happy with it. Keep in mind though that the drum will eventually have to be replaced as well in addition to the toner.

Although when I did the math it still came out cheaper

I print a lot. Samsung and Brother make good inexpesive laser printers. I have a Brother HL-2040 that I get 5000 sheets more or less out of. It rated at 1500-2000 pages but I've averaged around 5,000 for the last 5 refills. Just put electical tape on the toner level sensor hole or it will say its out in 1500. You need to shake the catridge every 100-150 sheets for the last 500 or so. I did get close to 6000 when I didnt have a replacement and I need to print alot of copies for the next day.I had to shake it every 20 pages toward the end.

You can get these for under a 100 or 150 for the HL-2070 which is networkable with a built in nic

if printing photos are not a big concern.....

look around for the cheapeast POS low end inkjet you can find. i generally find them for under 40-50.00 on clearence or sale.

the ink carts alone cost morethan the printer and they pare perfectly fine for lowvolume home use with color graphics. when the carts die, toss it and buy a new one.

if pics are an issue...

i have been using the hp all in ones at home for for 5+ years now <upgrade about every 3-4 years or when carts are no longer made> i currently have 2 hp 7210xi printers that have been nothing but perfect out of the box. they have seen much heavier use than what i would conside normal for home and ink life is decent. carts are alos refillable. i genrally get 4-5 refills out of a cart before it dies.

if you want to print photos, take a memory stick/thumb drive to wolf camera / walmart and have them print photo quality stuff there.. you'll save time and money (and frustration)

If you need color a Cannon is good to refill. I dont know about the newer ones but a BJC-3000 has used a pint of each color. This one has no print head or circutry in the cartridge. It just a container.

I HATE my Epson inkjet and I'm probably taking it to the range to put some 00 through it rather than replace the ink cartridges. Damned cartridges are about to eat me out of house and home. I have NEVER had such an ink-hog in all my life and the "individual" cartridges hold about 3 grams of ink each per Cartridge World which can't refill them either.

Brother DCP-7020 FTW!  Bought mine in March or so.  Love it.  Laser, no ink cartridges anymore. B/W only but that's fine with me
