Tomorrow, June 26th, 2008, the SCOTUS will hand down the very first decision in this nation's history that directly addresses the meaning of the 2nd Amendment.

Quite the coincidence considering the OTHER major historical event that occured in firearm history on June 26th:

June 26, 1934 - The National Firearms Act was passed.

Brought about by the lawlessness and rise of gangster culture during prohibition, President Franklin D. Roosevelt hoped this act would eliminate automatic-fire weapons like machine guns from America's streets. Other firearms such as short-barreled shotguns and rifles, parts of guns like silencers, as well as other "gadget-type" firearms hidden in canes and such were also targeted. All gun sales and gun manufacturers were slapped with a $200 tax (no small amount for Americans mired in the Great Depression, which would be equivalent to a tax of over $2,500 today) on each firearm, and all buyers were required to fill out paperwork subject to Treasury Dept. approval.

FWIW.

US V Miller addressed the meaning of the Second Amendment...

Miller was "insufficient" and was even mentioned as being not direct or complete by Justice Kennedy in oral arguments in the Heller case.

JUSTICE KENNEDY: "...it seems to me Miller, which kind of ends abruptly as an opinion writing anyway, is just insufficient to subscribe - to describe the interests that must have been foremost in the framers' minds when they were concerned about guns being taken away from the people who needed them for their defense."

ETA:

JUSTICE KENNEDY: "Well you're being faithful to Miller. I suggest that Miller may be deficient."

I find the fact that this is coming off the heels of raghead terrorists have American citizen rights, and child rape is not punishable b y death to be more disconcerting then the NFA act. Hell I seriously doubt, more than one of them even know what NFA stands for.

If they actually said that, they'd damn well better have the guts to make a definitive ruling.

I really hope it goes our way in a VERY clear and definitive manner.

I edited my post to include another reference by Justice Kennedy to Miller:

JUSTICE KENNEDY: "Well you're being faithful to Miller. I suggest that Miller may be deficient."

In very inspecific terms.  To say a short-barreled shotgun is not a military arm is short-sided.  A short-barreled rifle/carbine?  Sure, you can say the M4 is a machine gun which by the NFA means the barrel length doesn't matter as the primary use is in semi auto.

It will be history because of the ruling all formerly lawful gun owners will be labeled domestic terrorists .

Well on June 26, 2006, The Republic of Montenegro became the 192nd member of the United Nations. UN obviously means gun-grabbing, which means a collectivist decision tomorrow.

I wasn't thinking of the specific weapon so much as that the court ruled that the Second Amendment protected individual possession of weapons suitable for militia use.

eta: Yes, its an incomplete definition.  I'm just pointing out that we theoretically already had some ammo for attacking stuff like the unsavory portions of FOPA.
