What are the 'checks & balances' for the SCOTUS? some particularly biased individuals could fuck everyone over. |
|
The checks and balances are that they get nominated by the President and have to be confirmed by the Senate. A member of the supreme court serves until they dies, resign/retire, or are impeached (no member has ever been successfully impeached by both the house and the senate). |
Once they rule on a constitutional question, the only way to overturn it is through constitutional amendment. Lesser questions about statutes can be overturned by re-writing the statute. The most common check, however, is the power of appointment in the executive. Thus, vote McCain.

But Abe Fortas resigned under some pretty heavy pressure. The reasons are a bit vague. |
The checks and balances are congress who makes the laws, and the executive branch which implements the laws. Regardless, the decision of the supremes rests in reviewing laws already made. You live with whatever they decide whether you personally like it or not. |
