I've heard this multiple times: "CCW holders have a lower crime rate than police officers" Anyone have any state, DoJ, FBI, etc stats to back that up? I can find piles of stats showing extremely low crime rates among CCW holders, but nothing to prove that particular statement. I'm not disputing it, I'd just hate to make a comment like that without seeing some actual stats. Thanks. |

Part of it migh have to do with the fact that CCW holders have to go through a background check that is much more intrusive than the regular 4473 form. So naturally, CCW holders as a group are the least likely to commit crimes. The application process is designed to do exactly that... permit people who will be unlikely to commit crimes to carry a weapon to protect themselves. Apparently it works. I can't offer any explanation as to why LEOs are more likely to commit crimes than CCW holders, when we are told by our resident LEOs that they have to pass psych evaluations in order to get hired. Not to menttion all those cases where a cop is not charged with a crime when a regular citizen would be under the same circumstances. If this statistic is indeed true, then something needs to be done about it. Police should have LESS criminals in their ranks than CCW holders, who don't have any authority over the public. |

If you don't mind breaking the law, there's nothing that stops you from carrying concealed without a permit. If you get caught, you're in trouble, but it's fairly unlikely you will get get caught. Getting a concealed carry permit costs money and requires some effort. One might ask, why would anyone bother? The people who bother are likely the kind of people who not only want to stay within the law but are willing to go to some trouble and expense to do so. That is an explanation of why CCW holders might tend to be law-abiding. Doesn't address anything about cops or even if they are or aren't more law-abiding. |

Thanks for the replies. I'm familiar with CCW stats, since I'm a GFL (GA CCW permit) holder myself. I've found plenty of stats that show the crime rate among CCW holders to be nearly nonexistant - from .02% to .05%. Anyone have any stats on the crime rate among police? This isn't LEO-bashing or anything - I'm just looking for another stat to add to my arsenal of pro-gun arguments. |

I searched for a good while to try to find some statistics, but I couldn't find any statistics for crimes committed by police. This link might help explain why it's so difficult to find such statistics. Statistics Link The only good thing about the absence of statistics sowing the rates of crimes being committed by police is that the premist that CCW holders are less likely to commit crime cannot be refuted. There simply aren't any stats on LE crimes to refute it with. |
