Thought it was pretty gay but then again I watched it from start to finish.

Question- did anyone notice in the Lawler fight that the doctor was examining his opponent's WRONG eye?  He got jabbed in the right eye . . . she looked at his left eye.  Then she stopped the fight.

Oh, and Slice is a fucking joke.

The female fighter (Gina) is fricking HOT.

Was pretty lame. First sign of blood and the doctors were calling the fight. I can understand them wanting to tame it down for prime time, but why bother. The dude who was kicking Kimbos butt had that big califlower ear. If the stopped the fight because his ear was bleeding, why even let him fight. The ear was hugh before the bout even started.

What the hell was the deal with the dude's balloon ear in the last fight.

Kimbo is a complete rookie, no ground game.

At the end of the Kimbo fight, Kimbo was soooooo out of breath, I thought he was going to pass out.  Another 30-60 secs in that match, and I think Kimbo would have been taken out, probably by submission.

At one point I swear Kimbo tapped, I need to watch it again. He took countless shots to the head and was nor defending himself. Looked like preferential treatment was going on

Mainstream media at its best

He did tap, on the elbow of his opponent, during a standing guillotine.  It was a quick/rapid tap for about 2-3 seconds.  Even the opponent felt it and asked the ref about it before letting Kimbo go.  The fight should have been stopped at the end of the 2nd round when Kimbo was not intelligently defending himself, while his arms were pinned and he was eating fists and elbows.  I know in UFC they stopped the Matt Hughes/BJ Penn fight for that.

To be fair, he did look a wee bit punch drunk.  If Thompson has any sort of submission skills the fight would have easily been over in the 2nd round.

Kimbo would easily get tooled by a more rounded heavyweight or even a moderately good striker.  Thompson is neither and other than the Yoshida fight, which was a pure brawl and not Yoshida's strong suit, I can't think of any notable wins (other than perhaps and over the hill Don Frye).

Thompson was hand-picked to lose in a brawl with Kimbo.  He out-fought Kimbo through the first two rounds.

I can't think of any top 15 heavyweight who wouldn't hand Kimbo his ass.

But those shots seemed rather ineffective to me.  They weren't well-delivered, Tito Ortiz-like, elbows and those punches didn't have much on them.

Yeah the pre fight BS is typically longer than the actual fight that bugs me.

Docs often look at the uninjured part to get a bearing on what the injured side should look like. Not sure if that is what was happening but the docs did seem to have orders to not let it get too gory.

It will suck if they lame out MMA for the masses.

And sorry submissions piss me off. Theoretically you can have a full on superior fighter lose to a pussy if the guy gets lucky and wrenches on a joint. I think Submissions should stop the round with the round win going to the guy who does the submission. They go to their corners and have their normal corner time then start the next round.

Submission should give you a round not a win.

That would be fucking retarded.

A guy submits because he is either going to have a leg or arm broken, or he is going to be choked into unconciousness.   Either one means he can no longer fight.

Maybe you should just watch kickboxing and stay away from MMA.

A guy getting pounded and them pulling out the submission to win is the perhaps the most exciting part of MMA for me.

As example, watch this clip of MMA legend Sakuraba against Smirnovas.  It is a 7 minute video of the fight.  Sakuraba may have been knocked out, and there was controversy over the ref repositioning the fighters, but that is permissible under the K-1 Heros rules when one person is through the ropes.  It is a perfect example of a guy getting beaten to hell and pulling out the submission win.

ETA:  By the way, your idea of only having a submission stopping the round only to restart would simply lead to some fighters going for a serious injury so that the opponent could not continue, e.g. snap the arm in an arm bar rather than put it to the point of breaking to get the win.  That is not what MMA is about.

Sorry, but no.  Submissions are fight enders.  You think if someone cranks an armbar to completion, the guy is going to be able to fight with a broken arm?  Or a broken shoulder from an oma plata?  Or how about after he's choked unconscious, or has his ACL,MCL,and PCL torn from a heel hook?

Tapping out is an acknowledgment that the fight is over and to continue would inflict serious, possibly permanent maiming injury to the fighter.

Kimbo slice has decent stand up skills.  He connects with a lot of his punches, more than the average heavy weight does, and he's got power behind them.  Thompson showed a chin, but if the doctor hadn't stopped the fight, Thompson would've gone down in the 3rd.

Must've watched a different fight then me then.  I saw a lot punches landing solidly on Thompson's chin, and if you've watched Kimbo before, you'd know he's good at landing punches.  That's not saying he's a great fighter, but he has a hell of a lot more skills than Bob Sapp.

Agreed.  Another thing he does well is slip punches.  People think he's a brawler for his street fights, but he's actually a decent boxer with good head movement and accurate, powerful punches.  But his ground game sucks despite being trained by Bas Rutten.  I suspect he was decently trained, but all that training went out the window when he started eating elbows on the ground.

The tapout is still a tapout. Are you saying they are half-assing the submission just to end the fight? If the person getting an arm bar taps he taps if he doesn't and he gets a broken elbow that is on him.

The point I am making is someone can completely dominate a fight, be in better conditioning work harder leading up to the fight and can lose just by luck of a movement. If that is cool to you fine. I have a different opinion.

Perhaps I should watch kick boxing. 20 minutes of pre fight cheerleaders and smoke and dancing etc. for a 2 minute fight that ends in an arm bar is pretty damned lame.

Way too many fights are 2 minutes of tapping leading hands, a caught kick which ends up in submission and then 20 more minutes of dancing girls, smoke and hyper commentators. It wouldn't be so bad if they got rid of all the pre-fight production. Hell the announcement is often longer than the fight.

WTF.  Maybe you should go watch WWE or other shit.  Submissions aren't "luck of a movement"...that is better described as a "puncher's chance".  What you are mistaking of "luck of movement" is a clash of styles.  If the "better fighter" was a more rounded rounded, he wouldn't lose by "luck" when it goes to the ground.

It sure looked like Kimbo tapped out to me.  I also think if the fight had been allowed to continue Thompson would have won on points. He looked a little slap happy but he stood up to the same punches earlier and didn't go down. It is too bad Thompson didn't have better ground skills. Had he gotten a good mount on Kimbo when he was pounding him with his elbows the  fight wouldn't have gone three rounds.

I thought CBS's attempt at prime time MMA was pathetic and chick fights do nothing for me.

I think you underestimated the female fighters - they showed excellent skill, endurance and a warrior spirit (more than half the men I see in MMA these days).   If their not the top of the female MMA then they are close, and that fight would have been well received on just about any broadcast (UFC, the old Pride, etc).

I was very impressed with both of them - I think that was the best fight of the night, with the lawler-smith fight a close second but ultimately a let-down because of the doc-stoppage.  If anything, I would say the first few "undercard" fights and of course the female fight actually saved the broadcast.   They shot themselves in the foot by promoting Kimbo so heavily and having that fail miserably.
