| I caught a crappy spyware tonight that is bugging up my system. Norton didn't find it and I am looking for a removal program. Is PC tools Spyware Doctor worth the $30? Any good freeware programs? Any help is appreciated. |
+1 more Spybot Search and Destroy is the best. It is complete and free and updatable. Get Avast Home Edition V. 4.8 Here->Avast 4.8 Complete Home Edition It is also free complete and updates automatically. Together these two rock. I had them installed for a couple of months and have had ZERO problems. f you have persistent problems on start up or with pop up ads after installing run this. CCLEANER CCLeaner is also very good, as well as very easy. I've been through a lot of supposedly great ones, free and paid programs. None matched these. |

here is your prescription: If you have Norton, uninstall it. Download, Install and update these Programs. Then Run Windows Update. Firefox 2 (use this to surf the net, not IE) No Script add on (follow usage instructions, or you will think you have problems CCleaner (run once a week) AVG Free AVG anti-rootkit free Avast 4 free (or this alternative to AVG, if you install this...dont install AVG) And If you must use spyware detector programs, then use these approved versions: the real ADAWARE can be found here the real Spybot SD can be found here |

I usually use spybot: security.kolla.de and Ad-Aware: lavasoft.de and AVG: free.grisoft.com Another nifty tool that helps on heavily compromised systems is DrWeb's Cureit - runs pretty quickly & gets some of the crap off of the system so the other tools don't take a week to run. Here's the link. The GriSoft site for some reason doesn't want it to be easily found... ![]() www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html |
| I use spybot and adaware, but I also have had great success with Trend Micro's PC-cillin. It's not free, but it has caught everything I've ever had try to infect my system. |
