I was thinking about picking one of these up, however the problems I read about kel tecs on the internet has me wary, and anything comparable in size is twice the cost. I guess I could just not buy another gun and hold off till I can afford something better. ![]() Trying to avoid .380 so I don't have to buy another caliber of ammo. Anyone have a PF9? Impressions? Likes, dislikes, problems? ETA: I am kind of looking for something lighter /smaller than my Sig 228. |

My dad got one for my sis. It has the same false trigger reset "issue" that the P3AT has. It isn't much fun to shoot at all, and you can't extreme limp wrist it, or it tends to malfunction, but the thing has been 100% reliable when shooting with even half way decent technique, it's more accurate than it has any right to be, it's very small for a 9mm, and it's inexpensive. We did have to modify the mag follower just a tiny bit, but I feel like it was a total non-issue, as the problem didn't affect function or reliability, but only the slide lock. |
Yes, if I wanted answers 2 weeks from now instead of now. I have browsed the Kel tec forum and handgun discussions, but was hoping for some more exposure in GD, since lots of people here don't go to the tech forums. I was going to look at them tomorrow, so was looking for expediency. |
Could you elaborate on your reasoning for that decision? I am curious since I'm not really set on the keltec. |

Nlinc: I have one. Have had it for a while. It is my usual carry gun so I tote it quite a bit. I also take it to the range at least once a week to practice. It is one of the earlier models before they modified the feed ramps to better accept hollowpoints. it is an acceptable backup or deep-cover handgun. PROS: Very flat, very small, very lightweight, very inexpensive. Excellent quality especially for the price. Designer (Kelligren) is a brilliant designer and it shows when you field strip the gun for cleaning. Effective compact lasers available. Effective carry gun can be carried in variety of pants pockets, shirt pockets, etc. When carried covertly it lies very flat, does not PRINT. NEUTRAL: Not the easiest gun to field-strip. Not the hardest by a long shot. (Much easier than, say, a Ruger Mk I/II/III. A little more difficult than a Browning M1935 or M1911 design. About on par with short-barrel M1911s) CONS: Initially took a long time between order and delivery. Does NOT feed any kind of hollowpoint ammo reliably. (Note: This was apparently corrected in later models.) Not rated for +P+ ammo. OVERALL IMPRESSION: I like it. I carry it. I'd much rather carry, say, a Kimber Compact .45ACP or S&W .357 J-Frame, except this is a much easier carry especially when it's warm outside and you're in shorts and t-shirt. Best laser I tried (and is still on the gun) is the Armalaser. It uses the rail but also partially hides the contour of the gun and makes it less likely to print. See for yourself: Armalaser for Kel-Tec PF9 Hope this post was helpful! |
Well the reliability of revolvers well established. I was probably going to settle on the Smith & Wesson Model 642 due to size, weight, and the round. I need a gun I can go jogging with, the added option of a snake shot load makes it especially appealing for me, as i'm in a rural area and I'm more at risk for an encounter with a wild boar or snake while jogging than a mugging. There are .357 snubbies that will also fire .38 special rounds too. And if you really want to use a laser, you can just get Crimson trace grips for it. |
I agree with your reasoning for choosing a J-frame over the KelTec, but, just to be sure, you don't intend to shoot at/defend yourself from a wild hog with a snake shot round, right? |
No. I was thinking of loading the first two rounds with snake shot and the next three with hollow point .38 special +P If a hog would come at me I would have to pepper it with a couple shots of snakeshot before getting down to business. |

HommieDaKlown: In addition to the PF9 I also had a 38 J frame snubbie which I traded in for a 357 J frame snubby with adjustable sights. The Crimson Trace moved from the 38 to the 357 when I traded. It is an excellent carry gun (as is my Kimber .45 Compact) except both the Kimber and the S&W are BIGGER AND HEAVIER. I guess either of the larger carry guns could be carried in a front-side fanny pack if you are jogging in Florida? However I think a Floridian would have more (reasonable) carry options with a small flat gun like the KelTec or (much more $$$) Kahr. Honestly, since I already own very nice J frames, if I were in the market for a compact carry 9 mm or 357 class gun today, I think my choice would be this: Springfield Armory EMP I happen to be partial to Browning's 1911 design. It's pricey, though! Hope this post helps. |

I have a PF9. Pros: Tiny. Not as tiny as a P32, but it is the tiniest 9mm around that I am aware of. I can conceal the PF9 with *almost* anything. There are some times I have to carry a P32 because the PF9 will print, but that is rare. Cons: She kicks like a mule. I don't consider myself recoil sensitive, but because it's such a lightweight pistol shooting a relatively large round (full house 9mm), it kicks hard. When I shoot it at the range to rotate carry ammo or just for training, I can't hardly shoot more than a box of 50 because the webbing part of my hand where the pistol grip contacts gets sore. Get it if you want the most concealable 9mm around. Don't get it if you're looking for something cheap to toss rounds down range with. p.s. I have had zero FTF/FTE with mine. I shoot both wally world value packs FMJ and Remington UMC JHP. |
This is basically why I wanted it. I realize any pocket/ mouse gun will not be comfortable or fun to shoot. I have my sig for blasting at the range. |
|
I have PF9 and it is what you want. It is THE lightest 9mm available. I have the Clip mounted to the frame and wear it in light house shorts when home. Very uncomfortable to shoot more than 50 times. Very comfortable to wear. Very inexpensive. Very practical and tactical. More accurate than my P3AT. This is a very niche gun. It isn't a jack-of-all-trades, but when you need a very light 9mm (with the capacity of a 1911) then it does it's job. |

I have one and it is fine for what it is. I leave it in the car. This is what I plan on getting to carry on my person: Walther PPS 9mm ![]() www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=13152&storeId=10002&productId=60492&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=44304&isFirearm=Y |
Cingrats! I have no experience with the little clip thing, but I can vouch for the Desantis Nemesis pocket holsters. I have one for the PF9 and one for the P32. Flawless. |
Called my brother to see if he wanted to go to the indoor range, since I bought a new gun. He asked what I bought and I told him it was the cheaper alternative to the PPS (his most recent "baby"), then he got a snobby tone and started trash talking Kel-Tec, even though he probably doesn't know what one looks like or know anyone who owns one (until me). ![]() I need to stop talking to him about guns, it just pisses me off. |
yea, i was looking at one at the gunstore on saturday. the trigger pull is way lighter and it feels nicer in the hand. im gonna get one and make my PF9 the backup. not to mention the pps is way more "polished", better fit and finish in every aspect. of course its 3x as much and i dont regret getting my pf9, i bought it the day i got my concealed carry permit and it has worked great other then replaceing the magcatch with an aftermarket metal one. im sold on pocket carry. ill never IWB carry when i can get 7+1 9mm in my front pocket. just to comfortable and easy. |
Need to borrow the 220 again to pistol whip him? Or maybe a BHP? |
I can pistol whip him with my 228 which is "too heavy" to CCW according to him. He bought the PPS cause he thinks his Glock 19 in OWB holster are too big to CCW.
|
Tell him to stop being a bitch...I'll CCW the 92FS next time we all go shooting... |
yea, but do you do that every day? ive tried carrying around my PX4 a couple times IWB. got a fancy tucker gunleather holster and all. annoying. no matter where i put it i cant even walk right unless its almost SOB. the only way i could carry comfortably is SOB or near SOB with a double stack and thats to dangerous. if you just want to carry every single day without fail and not have to worry about how long your shirt is or stupid crap like that pocket carry is the only way to go. yea, i know im gonna get a million of you that say you IWB your big double stacks every day, but i dont care. uncomfortable. weight doesnt matter to me. i wear a wilderness 1.5 riggers every single day. there just to damn thick and get in the way. maybe i need to try a full size thin single stack IWB, might be more comfortable. |
Get bigger pants. I CCW my Sig P220, 1911, CZ75, 92FS, Stoeger Cougar (like your PX4 but aluminum frame) or G19. All IWB. Only on special occasions do I not carry a fullsize handgun. I am 5'11 180 and live in Southern Arizona. The pants, belt and holster make more of a difference than the pistol. |
|
holy crap is the recoil stiff. Put 90 rounds through it without any hiccups. I then proceeded to put a mag through my 228 and it felt like a .22 compared to the keltec. I shot at 7 yards, and patterned more than I group till I figured out the best way to pull the trigger (I was jerking it badly at first). I need to get some more range time in and get myself a pocket holster and maybe the slide clip. |
Told you. It barks but it will allow you to carry full house 9mm in an extremely concealable package. If you ever have to pull the trigger in anger, I'm willing to bet you won't be concerned at all about recoil. |
I have been watching this animated demo for about 30 minutes....this gun is amazing, it ssems to have some kind of never ending magazine capacity. I may have to get one of these. It's like in the movies, it'll never run out of ammo!
|
I've got Speer GDHP 124gr. +P's in mine. The Keltec feeds and shoots 'em fine. Just not very pleasant to shoot. Mine goes everywhere. It's a CCW I don't mind getting banged up. |
the day i bought mine i put 150 rounds through it. it bruised up the web of my hand. noticed it for days. its not a range gun for sure. |
| I had a PF9 and it was great for packing in your pocket. Recoil is a bit harsh, but you can control it. I sold it recently on here since I mostly carry my G26 most of the time anyway. I never had a malfunction out of mine. I think you will like it. I recommend a pocket holster to keep it upright. |
