I am thinking about joining the Army after college in a few years.  I have been looking into various MOS's trying to figure out what I would like to do.  I really enjoy mountaineering so I was looking at the 10th Mountain Division.  What can ya'll tell me about that.  Thanks for all the help.

I would do it as an officer.  I did not realize how large of a difference that made.  I am just trying to research the different military paths.  I plan on graduating college with a degree in engineering, then serving for a few years.  I do not want to make the military my only career.

It's a safe bet that you are gonna be humping shit a lot heavier than you are use too thats all I can say because I'm USMC not army. It's not going to be as fun as it sounds, and you will realize that when you are freezing/sweating your ass off.

If you're going to college,  and you're going for your Master's degree,  you can become a commissioned officer rather than an enlisted man.

If you're going to be a bear, be a Grizzly.   Get that commission if you can.   Talk to your recruiter about that option TODAY.

Consider a military career track that matches your interests, skills and provides a path to a good career after you leave the military.  I have seen so many resumes from former military guys that have practically no transferrable skills to the civilian sector after their military years have ended.  It is sad really... but a lot of people give no thought to positioning themselves for the future - and then that day is here and they are poorly prepared for the transition.

The 10th is a light infantry division, not mountain. Name only, from WW2 lineage. The only "mountain" unit is 3/172 in the NG.

+1 on the commission.

Look, If you want to enlist, and experience a wide-assortment of things, try either
19D, Calvery scout. They operate on armored vehicles, like Bradleys, and they also do the door-kicking in part. They are the multi-taskers of combat arms. That said, you might wind up as the Personal Security Detail for the Battlion commander as he drives around his AO and points and yells at things.

You could also try a Combat Medic MOS. Not sure the MOS number, but they can be attached to any combat unit, from Armor to Infantry to anything inbetween. You will learn alot of useful skills (you'll be a walking 9-11 for the rest of your life) and you can see and cross train with whatever MOS makes up the unit you are attached to.

Forget 11B, or 11C. IF you want to do door-kicking, go 19D. If you think you might like tanks, and door-kicking, go 19K. I don't recommend 19K unless you love to work, very hard, and alot. Trust me on that, I went 19K and its 400% more work then any other combat MOS. That stupid machine requires more man-hours of maintaince then you could ever provide it in a lifetime, or your platoon's lifetimes. Stay away.

Enlisted:  92A, 11B, 92S, 13F, 42A, 37F, 92R, 38A, etc, etc, etc----all important.
Officer:  Needs of the Army.

The job you pick should be something you can see yourself doing?

Ask yourself a few questions as a self assessment and start eyeballing jobs from there.
Do you want to kill people?
Do you want to heal people?
Do you want to blow shit up?
Do you want to build things?
Do you want to be a "warrior"?
Do you want to support the "warrior"?
Etc, etc.

For now, you need to concentrate on finishing school, staying out of trouble, staying out of debt(minus student loans), and staying healthy.  Start harassing the recruiters your senior year.  The military will still be there.

ETA:  Unless you have a connection to the Army, research the other services as well.

I think you just need to think about what you want out of the Army..

A few years of fun, to do "your time", then I would say something Combat Arms related......If you want to avoid working with females also (except for MP)

If you want something that directly translates to the civilian side, there are plenty of other choices......  25B (Computer guy, basically) or 25S (multi channel Satelite comms) are two electronic related jobs that have good bonuses when you are in, because you can get out and get a decent job with them.....

Just dont fall into the pitfall of some MOS that doesnt translate to civilian life but is still a boring support job.. Examples: Supply, Mechanic, Office clerk, etc.....

Officer, I would say if you only want to do a few years, then avoid it... While they do get paid more, and treated a little better then a new private, they generally work longer hours and dont get to do the cool "Why I joined the Army" stuff as often...

1) Go ROTC & Officer

2) You don't pick your division, and the 10th doesn't do much mountaineering anymore - they're light infantry stationed in the frozen lands of northern New York...

3) Branch AR (code 19A), not IN (11A)...

Become an Officer.

Either through ROTC or OCS. ROTC if you have more than two years remaining of college.

OCS if you have 90 or more units.

Branching for Officers is very competitive. Branches like Infantry, Armor, and Aviation require a high GPA and good scores (LDAC assessment, PT scores) to get in.

Definitely go officer if your going to do it. Officers do still have an MOS it just ends in an A. And finally go aviation (crew rest)

Whatever you do, go officer.

If for no other reasons than A:  your life in the military sucks far less and B: it's easier to get a job once you're out.

Going into an interview as a former Captain holds a lot more weight than going in as a Staff Sgt or similar.  You are seen as already having management experience and you're much more likely to land a higher paying job that way.

Go 18A or go home, plus OCS sux.  You are already skipping on being enlisted so take the easy route go ROTC, your men won't really give a shit since you weren't enlisted to begin with.

When I was interested in Joining the Army I was going to go Cav scout. The recruiter just kind of looked at me funny and said thats the first time he's had anyone pick that. He was probably bullshitting though.
Then there was some kid that wanted to be a foward observer and they gave him shit for it all the time.
Lately I've been thinking about going back and talking to the recruiters again. Last time I was working like 60 hours a week and finally got pissed that he would make an appointment for me then when I'd show up he'd never be there.
Or hed say I missed an appointment that I never had. I dont think he is a recruiter anymore.

11B is the only way to go man!!! And if you go in as an officer your chances of being Infantry are about equal to that of being a tanker or cook from what I understand. Try to come in enlisted then go to OCS... I'd think you'd be better off that way, but I honestly couldn't say for sure. I'm enlisted for life buddy.

go all the way. Go 11b. Sign up for airborne Ranger package and go all out hardcore.

While your in school lift and run and train like a mad man. Become beastly before you go in. Basic will be a breeze. Jump school will be challenging. RIP will kick your ass but you'll make it if your determined to. After that you'll be asigned to one of the three batallions, then after more training its commando kick ass time.

After 1-2 tours sign up to tackle the "Q" course. Earn the right to wear the Green Beret.  If your determaned you can do anything.  Then the extreme combat will begin.

Don't become an officer just so the living is easier and percs are better. That's the making for a shitty officer that gets soldiers/marines killed.

Become an officer because you strive to lead men valienty into combat never flinching to do anything for your men. Those are the qualities of a truly great officer/NCO.

Also..done become a REMF(rear echelon mother fucker)

Also remember the military exists to crush our enemies of the world with extreme prejudice and defend the constitution and its people at any cost. Sign that dotted line knowing that theres a possibility of getting killed or maimed for life. If you accept that chance with out second thought you have the makings to become a full blooded combat soldier.
