My great aunt asked me to find out some info about an old gun she has.  All she knows is that she got it in a box of her mother's stuff when she passed away years ago.

Here is what it looks like:

It is a Smith & Wesson break action, 5-shot revolver.  There is a S&W symbol at the top of the black grip.  There is no model number or caliber anywhere to be found.  Printed on the butt of the gun is "91649". A 9mm bullet fits perfectly.  On the top of the barrel in small print it says:

"SMITH&WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS.U.S.A. PAT'D JAN 17& 24. 65.
JULY 11.65. AUG 24. 69. JULY 25. 71. DEC 2. 79. MAY 11&25. 1880"

The barrel is a little over 3 inches long.  Any info on the model, year, or any other facts would be appreciated.

Looks like a S&W Secret Service

ETA: The caliber is .38 S&W

They usually go for about $150-200

It is definitely a Smitty form that era....not sure as the model, though

Not a Special, a .38 S&W or S&W Long.

It's an easy mistake.  Most people don't know that there were different .38s, so you're ahead of the game.

Strongly recommend you NOT attempt to fire this pistol until it is checked by a qualified gunsmith.  Or does that go without saying?

If the inside of the barrel looks like the outside, or if the lockwork does, there really is no point.
I would be shocked if the springs are still good.

Well as much as I'd like to have this thing blow up in my hand, I think I'll hold off for a while.

Would be worth it if you posted the videos on Youtube

Okay.  I just got a little nervous when you were talking about fitting bullets into it.

S&W .38 Double Action Second Model. Caliber: .38 S&W. Made 1880-1884.

I have basically the same gun but a little later (4th model IIRC). Not a lot of value and most are in poorer shape but interesting still.

Guys what is the difference between that Smith and a Schofield?  I have a modern top break and it looks very similar to that with a longer barrel in 38 spl.

Sorry for the hijack but....

The Schofield is single action and that one is double action for starters. The Schofield is a large frame as well.
