Screw MS Paint. Old school Bic and white paper FTW!

For your late night entertainment I have come up with a hypothetical question for Arfcom.

How many helium filled foil metallic balloons does it take to elevate a 15 pound cat?

Given:
Cat - 15 Pounds
balloon tie down harness - 1\2 pound
Balloons - 18" round foil metallic birthday\mitzvahs balloons

DO  remember to account for the weight of the video camera duct-taped to Mr. Whisker's head.

eta: Don't forget to carry an umbrella for all the feces and piss that will be scared right out of the cat.

There is a clue in the problem that explains the handwriting.

You're an engineer? Or at least studying to become one. Those flip flops bring back some bad memories

So... what kind of electrical work were you performing between drinking and devising ways to torture your kitty cat?

Well as I recall from my eons ago days in Physics we used to discuss PointCats of Static Electricity.  In other words how many times would you have to rub the back of a cat on a nylon carpet before you could hold it up and stick it to the ceiling like a charged balloon?

How many pounds of lift does one balloon generate?

Cat + Vertical Travel = Confused Kitty.

You just need enough balloons to make the cat go airborne if the A/C turns on.

Kitty Zepplin of Death? Epicness in the making.

Helium has a density of about ~0.18 g/l. Air, for the purpose of this discussion, has a density of ~1.25 g/l. You work out the buoyancy clacs yourself, Newky-Boy!

according to this:

www.cockeyed.com/science/helium/helium.shtml

A single latex party balloon can lift about 7.4 grams. 15 lbs is about 6804 grams, so it would take about 932 latex party balloons to lift a 15 lb cat, exclusive of the cat harness.

This seems high to me. I suspect small party balloons are not efficient on a weight per volume basis. The experiment referenced is also vulnerable to small errors. For example, if a party balloon can actually lift 8.5 grams the number of balloons is reduced to 800, and at 10 grams it is down to 680. All that is easily within the measurement error.

Use weather balloons.

No treadmill at this time. Perhaps on a future problem.

There is no "between". I am always looking to incoperate new knowledge to test on kitty
