I have a pop-up that I can't get rid of.  I have Norton 360 but it didn't find anything.  It is one of those pop-ups that says you have a virus and you need to click it to get software to fix it.  I also tried system restore to a previous date/time but it was unable to complete.

Spybot S&D, run in safe mode.  AVG anti-virus in safe mode also.  Be sure to update to lastest detections.
I don't think av/spyware programs that you buy are worth it anymore.  For home use at least.

And Norton sucks.

Delete, install free AVG anti-virus.

Also, I have heard of some of those spybots just like that one coming in through an unfirewalled port you may have open..

A computer geek will be along shortly to either confirm or deny.

So what were you doing when you got said spyware?

I ended up on a site that hosts videos like Ebaums World or Puttfile or something.  It had videos of things like car wrecks and skydiving and stuff but I clicked the wrong link somewhere and then the popup happened.

As said, Ad-Aware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy, and add Spywareblaster to that.

Those, plus at the very least, AVG anti-virus will get and KEEP you free from this kind of crap.

Get, install, use, repeat often.

All you need...

I had the exact same virus on my PC a few months ago and it was a real pain to get rid of. Neither Norton or Ad Aware could detect it or get rid of it. Someone here sent me to a link to a program called SmitFraudFix. If you download the free program and follow the directions it completely removed the damn thing from my PC. It will work.
SmitFraudFix

Try it out and let me know how it goes

SmitFraudFix works.

Whatever you do, don't click on the popup to get the software.

First and foremost. TURN OFF system restore BEFORE doing anything else.

If you don't the virus won't go away. Scan get rid of, reboot, scan again to be sure it is gone and then turn System Restore back on.

Well, I got rid of it.  It had my system restore messed up so it wouldn't roll back to a previous date.  It also altered my google searches and added porn and beheadings for the first 8 or 9 results no matter what I searched for.  If I googled sesame street it brought up a link for You Tube porn.

It was also taking my searches for spybot and the other programs you have been listing here and linking all the results back to itself.  I couldn't run ad aware or anything.  I finally saved all my pictures and music stuff that it probably didn't infect and restored the whole computer to factory settings.  I then set everything back up and scanned my pictures that I put on a thumbdrive before reinstalling on the computer.

Everything is fine now.  Be careful if you go to even a short film site if it isn't a non-download site like You Tube.

Why do people write these programs?
