Does anyone know why my pressure washer will not load up if at full throttle?

If I tap the throttle just ever so slightly down so that it's 90% and it will load and un-load just fine.

What's strange is I just replaced the unloader assembly due to it being seized and for the first 10 minutes it worked fine at 100% throttle after the replacement.

Before I replaced the un-loader it wouldn't load up if the throttle was over 50%.

Anyone have some ideas?

I'm happy with 90%-95% but I'd like to know wtf is going on if possible.

I need a better description of what it is doing.

"Not loading up" does that mean not pressuring up?

What does your pressure gauge read?

No, they're not free.  Wait, wat?

Few more questions.

When let off the trigger, does it pressure up and by-pass?

When you pull the trigger does it have a lot of pressure and then drop off?

Yes, if it's at full throttle and I pull the trigger on the wand, it will just come out regular tap water pressure as if the motor's not even on.

If I tap the throttle down to 90%, it will load up fine.

Make sure there is no trash in the nozzle.

Then back the unloader valve off a few turns.

How did you set the unloader? Do you have a gauge?

YEs, it always bypasses. IT has never stalled when letting off.

No, it never pressurizes when at 100% throttle.

I hear walmart just gives them away, if yours is malfunctioning just get a new one.

Tag for good info.

My PW sometimes wont fully load up when I'm using my surface cleaner.

I hate trying to troubleshoot intermittent problems.

You probably do have a clogged nozzle or too small of nozzles.

It is a pretty common problem in surface cleaners. Does it vibrate?

What is happening [most likely] is the unit is over pressurizing and the unloader is bypassing.

Fixing pressure washers on the internet is harder than fixing them on the phone and I gave up trying to fix them on the phone 15 years ago.

The more I think about it the more I think you have a faulty unloader, or possibly the wrong one.

Take some pics and let me know what kind of pump and what brand and model unloader.

I will see if it is the correct one tomorrow.

I have 3 different nozzles and it does it on all 3.

Set the unloader?

You thread it in until it the rubber gasket seals and it's flush against the housing.

See the knob on the top? Does your have one of those?

I need some pics of your pump and how it is set-up.

If it has an easy start or safety relief that is plumbed back into the inlet, that is most likely your problem.

Thanks for your help BTW, you rock.
No it's the way cheaper kind.
As a matter of fact, I've read my pump is garbage from the factory, lost of complaints.
Mine hasn't failed yet but I can tell the unloader design is a weak link.

Here's the specs:

Generac 1450 pressure washer
Type: 5280CP (on the serial # tag on the unit)
Engine: Honda GC160

Briggs and straton bought out generac so the following part number for the unloader is a B & S part number instead of a generac part number.

Unloader Kit part number: 18789GS

Here's a few pics of the pump from the side where the unloader screws in.
The plastic cap that screws in and holds the tension is messed up cause I had to re-use the old cap, I stripped the new one getting it in.
The threads and rubber seal where fine on the old.

Also don't lind the allen wrench in the oil fill hole for the pump, I'm topping off the oil as we speak and the allen wrench gets the air bubbles out quicker.

The old one was basically seized in there and it took some tricks to get it out.

I think it was posted around the beginning of 2007.
I remember reading the thread before it got trashed, so it was either posted when I was lurking, or shortly after I joined.

It vibrates enough that after 5 or 6 hours behind the surface cleaner, I can still feel it in my hands 5 hours after I I'm done tearing down and back home. I always thought it was supposed to vibrate

It is due for PMCS so I'll pull the nozzles and make sure they are clear.

I'll talk to one of my service guys tomorrow. We quit working on those and that style pump came out WAY after I quit doing repair myself.

Does any water leak out of the thermal relief valve ? [the thing with the hose on it]
