Yeah, so, I realized my collection is missing a modern one. I'd like a .308 precision-y rifle. I've wanted a Remington 700 for the longest time, but I checked out a Savage 10 today and really liked all the features that came with it. And how are Winchester 70s? I guess I'm more interested in the rifle having a solid, accurate action than anything else (I don't mind working with triggers or buying barrels). I'd also not like the rifle to be very heavy because I'll probably be hiking with it., so 10-12 lbs. max. Finally, I'm thinking no more than $1500 initially which will include glass. So what would ARFCOM recommend? |

You may be stiring up a shit storm with the "Which is better, Remington or Savage" question. Both are excellent rifles which have their advocates and detractors. Each is more than capable of the job at hand. Your decision should be based on which rifle offers the features you want. Check the fit and finish. How well does it fit you? Which is more comfortable for you to hold? The Remington does have a VERY large number of aftermarket parts available, but the Savage is gaining ground in this area. It all comes down to the fact that nobody can tell you what rifle is best for you. Handle them, shoot them if possible and then decide which is the right choice for what you want. |

FN SPR. It is built off of the awesome pre-'64 style Winchester Model 70 action and is one of the best buys for the money on the market. Word is that they are extremely accurate. ETA: Just saw the price constraints... I'm not sure how well the SPR meets those requirements, but with a Super Sniper scope and rings it shouldn't be too much more. It includes an integral 20MOA base, so you won't need to pay for one of those. |
| Probably will only muddy the waters more but, I'm seriously eyeballing a CZ550 Safari in 375H&H to finish off my bolt collection, not totally sold on it yet. I have bolts from .22 up to 350 Rem Mag but I want to get a .375 to top them all off. See if CZUSA has anything you like. |
| Personally, (at the risk of sounding like a Winchester snob, which I'm not btw) I prefer the Pre '64 Model 70. The controlled push feed system and positive large claw extractor coupled with what is or ever was best factory trigger, is what propelled it to legendary status of all hunting rifles. IMHO |

I have a Winchester model 70 Coyote and it is the most accurate rifle I own to date. It is not pre-64, the only thing I don't care for is the push-round feed. I'd really like to see the new 2008's since they seem to have really changed a lot of the basic design - including going back to the controlled-round feed, new trigger, and improved safety. |

FN PBR i have an HS in 300winmag that's awesome. only thing is that it's the HEAVY Tactical, yeah no shit. so i need a gun to hunt with. after some hands on i think i may go with the FN. fair price, top quality, mod 70 action. what's not to like? oh, AND you can get it in GREEN! ETA: my vote is other but it's still a winchester |
Sure, their receiver integral scope mounts are a well thought out design feature, but their triggers are one of the worst in a "quality" production rifle, their barrels are too inconsistant, and their bedding is usually not so great, either... Now, before you label me a Ruger hater, I own a Speed-Six .357mag, a 22/45, a 10/22, and a Super Redhawk in .454Casull... - georgestrings |
Ever been to ANY benchrest comps??? 700s, and 700 designs dominate the world of precision rifle competition - so much for your complaint of their "thin ass recoil lug"... I've had no trouble with my 700BDL DM in .300WinMag whatsoever - and that's a fairly aggressive round to test a recoil lug's strength... - georgestrings |
That's a good point. Now that you got me thinking about it, the Savage I checked out today would be nearly impossible to operate the saftey with gloves on. I guess I'll check out some CZ and Sako rifles before I make a decision. |
+1, also come on down ( if you haven't already ) to the Precision Rifle forum in the Amory. We can all use another precision freak. |
| The riflemans rifle. Easy to adjust trigger. Controlled round feed. claw extracter The M70 has always been mt preference. I am hard on bolt guns and I have had the problems with a M700, even tho i like it to. But i have had 3 extractors break on m700s before. Accuracy wise from the factory, I can barely tell any difference |
