Ok, let's do this right.

If you were a commander and had to choose one weapon to arm your troops, what would it be?

M16A2?

On AR15.com does this result surprise anyone?

Ar15/M16 - 71%...?

It depends on the situation.  In the militia example stated earlier, I'd stick with the M16/AR15 because it's ubiquitous in the US military.

If it was a "you can have anything you want" type of deal, I'd go with the HK G36.  They never get dirty, and HK say they have one with over 25,000 rounds fired through it with not one signle failure/jam.

God Bless Texas

Hmm why isnt the FAL up there? Interesting.....

I would say the SKS. Cause as most members here can tell you, Norinco is a fine weapon, and most militia guys only want to spend about $120.00 for a good gun. Course these same guys will contact me wanting to know if I can get them one for $80.00. "Any ammo come with it for that price?"

Steyr, just curious, how cheap could you get SKSs for us?  I have a dealer who does transfers for $10.

Are you familiar with my "nad kick" special?

Any firearm at MY costs, no transfer fees, no sales tax. BUT, I get to kick you once in the nads hard as I can.

Does that kick come with any ammo?

This poll is in serious need of an "other" catagory.  My unit would all have 50BMG's, since they can destroy anything from a range of over 10 miles.  [:D]

I voted for other, M1A.
But with a limited budget and plenty of guys. I predict my 50 guys with Russian bolt actions would take out your two guys with AR's.

Well, If I had to buy them all myself they would be M44's, unless somebody knows of something even cheaper?

The FAL would have been up there if we were able to have more than 5 options.  I should have said "assault rifle", even though the term is a bit mis-leading as not many people legally own fullauto's.

I would choose the M16/AR15 too.  As already mentioned, the rifle is native to our own military so ammo, magazines and spare parts are abundant.  Also, many folks will be prior military and will be familiar with the weapon already and can help teach others proper weapon handling.

Another up-side is that if you "upgrade" to a dropped M16 (fallen soldier) you'll already be familiar with the weapon, you'll just have an extra position with the selector lever.

Seems to make the most sense given our nationality and location.

I say the M-16/AR-15 but I don't really know that much about the M96 or M76,so I could only back it up to a point.

But I will say this, the M-76 and 96 better be damn good guns to really be better that the M-16.

What! No FALs or M1As?

If this militia was not a formal part of the US armed forces and current civilian firearms laws applied, my unquestioned choice would be the Springfield M1 scout shooting expanding ammo.  If this militia was part of US forces and Geneva rules applied, then I would choose a select fire M14 in the same scout configuration shooting match ball ammo.  When possible, militia members would complement their rifles with premium optics including the Aimpoint M2.

A question posed strictly in the confines of the above statement:
Should the SHTF and I happened across an M16, and for some reason I preferred my M4gery, would I be able to swap my Bushie collapsible stock and upper assembly and use the M16 lower and bolt assembly to get the select fire option?  Jeesh, if the holes lined up, this could be done in about 90 seconds with a spanner or vicegrips for the buttstock.

I think the M16 platform can do anything the rest of the choices can do and better. More available accessories, more of a modular system, and more accurate from probably than any of the others.

No Slack!

In keeping with beekeepers train of thought, ave all those dedicated M1 Garand  and obsolete bolt action shooters thought of what will happen if the SHTF? What are they gonna do for ammo, reload everyday, pick up ALL of their brass? Yeah right! I like the idea of ammo and "dropped" weapons at my disposal that I'm already familiar with, thank you.

Something else about ARs in battel,I can put everthing I will ever need to fix my AR in a back pack and take it with me.
People say AKs last sooooo long but if you do need to fix it(and yes sometimes you do) you are f*ed!

Just try to put a mill and a press as well as a gunsmith in a back pack[:D]

if I had a company of guys similar to those of us who hang out here on AR15.com and have working knowledge of firearms, then the M16/AR15 would get the nod IF I had the money to afford such weapon.  But if the lack of firearm knowledge and cash are a big factor, the AK would get the tap.  Ammo for either gun should be easy to obtain.

I think it would actually end up being "bring what you've got".

#1 - Anything not using 5.56 or 7.62X51 isn't a viable LT weapon.  Getting ammo for the others over the LT is the problem.

#2 - Any semi-auto without a ready source of parts & magazines isn't a viable LT weapon. Once the others break and cannot be readily repaired is the next problem.

That really leaves only one viable weapon...the one in the lead. My opinions of course.

Sorry, the M44 still rules. If the Chinese or Russians try to take us over, their MG ammo can be used in our rifles. The M-44's are so cheap, you don't need spare parts, you can carry spare actions. Bolt actions are less fragile and prone to breakage.
Plus you can arm so many more.
[sniper]
Plus the other problem with the AR, ammo consumption. Aimed fire is better than spray & pray.
Or even better, Mosins backed with a .50. M2HB.
